Last week we made the first step at potty training little J - we bought a potty. We have left it in the corner of the room just so he can get used to it being there. He knows what it is and what it's for and I think he genuinely wants to use 'a big toilet' as he calls it and he is showing signs.
He knows when he has done a wee or a poo because he will touch the front of his nappy if he has done a wee and he will come to me with a fresh nappy in his hand. If he does a poo he tells you straight away. He doesn't really like his nappy being wet or soiled so he is always keen to have a nappy change. I know it doesn't bother some children and they will sit with a dirty nappy without letting you know but he's the total opposite. I've took this as a sign that its time to potty train. He has had a few accidents during nappy free time but again when he's wet he won't sit in it he will come straight to me and let me know.
There was a day last week when he said he needed a poo before he had actually done it so we whizzed to the potty and he was quite happy to sit there, and sit there and sit there. He was brumming cars and reading a book what was within his reach. I was eagerly sat with my camera and video camera waiting to see if he had done anything. Every time I asked if he had finished he just said 'no'
So after about 20 minutes (and that is no exaggeration) he decided to tell me he had finished. I didn't think he had done anything but to my surprise he had done a poo poo. I was so proud and showered him with praise.
He was really pleased with himself but he hasn't done anything else since so its time to whip off the nappy and get him trained because I know he can do it.
To hep and encourage him through his phase in his development we will be using Thomas & Friends My Thomas Potty Book and Thomas & Friends Well Done Thomas, Activity Book . Little J loves Thomas and has done since he was a baby. His first ride on was Thomas and he has most of the trains for his train track.
Using the stickers and reward chart will help to encourage him whilst we potty train. All children love stickers and I know he will love showing his big brother that he's earned at sticker or two.
As little J goes to nursery now I am hoping he will see other children using the 'Thomas' potty and he will want to use it too.
I think as a parent you need to set time aside for potty training. It's not necessary a hard time but it can be frustrating as accidents will happen but you need to be patient and focused and never give up. Once them nappies come off they stay off.
I am really looking forward to updating you all on this next step for little J and hopefully it won't be long before he's totally potty trained.
Do you have a little one who is about to start using the potty? I have a lovely giveaway to win both Well Done Thomas and My Thomas Potty book.
All you need to do is enter below and good luck.
