I have said before just how much we enjoy playing board games. We love playing games suitable for kids, family and adults. We love finding new games to play so when we were asked to join the Blogger Board Game Club a few months ago we had to say yes. It’s the perfect opportunity to try our new games and add to our ever growing collection. When this month’s game arrived we were excited to see it was an ‘adult’ type game. Pandemic puts you on a disease fighting team with the hopes that you will not only keep four deadly diseases at bay but also discover their cure.
The first thing you should know about Pandemic is, you will be part of a team. It’s a co-operative game meaning all players will either win or lose. This is the first game that we have owned were we are not playing against each other but working together to find the four cures.
Pandemic includes a game board, 7 role cards, 7 pawns, 6 research stations, 6 wooden markers, 96 disease cubes, 48 infection cards, 59 player cards, reference cards and a rule book.
How to play
On your turn you can use up to four actions. Travel between cities, treat infected places discover a cure or build a research station.
A deck of cards will provide players of the game with these abilities however throughout the deck there are Epidemic cards that accelerate and intensify the diseases. A second set of cards controls the normal spread of infections.
Each player must plan their strategy using theirs specialists strengths. Doing this can help stop the diseases. If one or more of the diseases spread beyond recovery or your time elapses the all players lose. If all players cure the four diseases then you win the game.
It sounds complicated but once you get in to it, its really good fun and a perfect way to spend a winter’s evening. If you like games that will challenge your thinking and are not a quick play game then Pandemic will be perfect for you.
