Little J has watched Paw Patrol for a few years now, and the release of a Paw Patrol On A Roll video game for the major consoles isn't a surprise given how its popularity has increased in recent times. It's an interesting release as it surprises me that there are enough children old enough to play console games, but still young enough to enjoy Paw Patrol, to warrant a major game release. Having said that Little J loves his Xbox time, so maybe gaming is more popular with small children than I would have thought.
We thought we would give the game a try on Xbox One. Little J is confident using the controller so we handed over to him to have the first go.
The game visuals are bright and appealing. The characters are perfect representations of their TV selves and even their movements and skills are mirrored in the game. This is a big plus for us as with a lot of these type of movie or TV tie ins, there seems to be a lack of attention to detail with the characters.
There are 16 levels to play through in the game, each using a combination of pups to make it from the beginning to the end and complete the challenge. All the levels are side scrollers from left to right, reminding me of a mobile device game more than anything.
Overall, the length of the game seems fair for what it is. I think around 6 - 8 hours gameplay will see the game completed. There isn't a great deal of variation in the levels, but that doesn't seem to bother Little J who is still progressing through the game.
What's important with Paw Patrol On A Roll is that you see it for what it is. A fun, quick, pick up and play game for Paw Patrol fans. You can't compare it to Assassins Creed or Forza Horizon because it isn't trying to be that type of game. I have read some very unfair reviews of the game which don't understand what the game is trying to do and who it is aimed at.
We really enjoyed Paw Patrol On a Roll and would recommend it providing you know what you are buying, and you know it will be suitable for your little one.
Paw Patrol : On A Roll is available on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC. It is recommended age 3+. With a RRP of £29.99 and available in most good toy stores and online it's the perfect gift for a Paw Patrol fan this Christmas.

Little J really enjoyed the challenges that are contained within the levels. Within each level you can choose to collect up to 200 pup treats and 5 gold badges, which in turn offer prizes in the main menu screen of unlockable pictures, badges and of course XB
ox gamer score achievements.
Little J played through two full levels with 100% achievement on both, however he did need to restart a couple of times. He really enjoyed making sure he got all 200 pup treats on each level.
