Days Out | The Very Hungry Caterpillar Live

Disclosure - We were gifted tickets to the show for the purpose of this post. Thoughts, opinions and photographs are our own.

A few weeks ago we took little J to the theatre for the first time to see The Twirlywoos live. He loved it so much so last weekend we headed back to The Theatre Royale to see The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show.

The show was made up of four Eric Carle books starting with Brown Bear Brown Bear, 10 Little Rubber Ducks, The Lonely Firefly and finishing with The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

Little J loves Eric Carle books so was very excited when the show began. The three actors took to the stage to act out the books using props and puppets. Although the actors are on stage manoeuvring the puppets you kind of forget they are there.

The puppets and props are identical to the illustrations in the book and it was lovely to hear the little ones in the audience shouting out what was coming next or shouting the names of the characters.

All four books were done so well and it was nice to see little J’s favourite books come to life.

Little J’s favourite story was The Very Hungry Caterpillar and John and I both liked The Very Lonely Firefly.

The show lasts approx 55 minutes without an interval which I think is the perfect amount of time for their targeted audience.

The Theatre Royale is an intimate venue with it being less than half full in the stalls the two times we have visited. It has a nice relaxed feel to it and I can’t wait to plan our next visit.
