Top Tips For Surviving A Festival With The Kids

Festivals suitable for all the family have become very popular over recent years and it's a great opportunity to get away for a night or two with the kids. You can even enjoy festivals with dogs now.  Festivals are outdoors, busy, long and loud but lots of fun so to make the most of your time it's important to be prepared for anything and everything.

Choose Your Festival Carefully

Before you decide on a festival make sure you have read up on what the festival has to offer for the children. Most family friendly festivals will have areas specifically for children offering arts and crafts, face painting and chill out zones so it's important to check what is available beforehand as there is nothing worse than a child who is bored.

Consider Travel Time

Some festivals look amazing especially Camp Bestival. I have always wanted to visit but it's a 5 hour drive from where we live so I have always decided against it. Trying to keep the kids entertained for long periods of time in the car can be a nightmare and then when you arrive at the festival they may be over tired which won't be a great start to your getaway.

Pack Wisely

Choosing what to pack depends on the size of your car. I pack everything but the kitchen sink wherever we go but I know others travel light. Whichever one you are you must remember packing essentials is a must.

Our Essentials List is...

Toiletries, toilet rolls, baby wipes, sun cream, insect repellent, allergy relief tablets or cream, hats, caps, sunglasses, tissues,  medication, money, appropriate clothing for all weathers, ear defenders, portable chargers, first aid kit, reusable water bottle, dry snacks such as crackers, biscuits, crisps.

I would also take...

tent, sleeping bags, pillows, blankets to sit on, camping chairs, a trolley or cart to carry stuff around in or for the kids to sit in should they get tired, umbrellas, parasol, small entertainment items for the kids such as activity books, crayons, cards.

Look At The Schedule Ahead Of The Festival

Find out the locations and times of everything you would like to see or do before you head out. Obviously your plans may change when you get there but it's good to have an idea of what is where and when.

Wear Wristbands

Pop a safety wristband on the kids with your name and number on in case they get lost. Also decide on a meeting place should you ever become separated.

Set A Budget

Festivals can be quite costly so it's a good idea to have a budget in mind of what you would like to spend on food, drink and activities such as children fairground rides. Maybe give the children a set amount each day that they can spend on activities.

Explore

Although you may have planned what you want to see and do, use any spare time to explore the festival. You may find something that you didn't know was there, an activity for the kids to get involved with. You can also keep a look out for the pop up gazebos that may have brands promoting new products, its a great way to pick up some freebies.

Have Fun

Enjoy. Whether you're a festival regular or a first timer make sure you have fun. If you are having fun and not stressing then the kids will have fun. Festivals are a great way to enjoy the outdoors,  and make lots of memories.
