How To Choose The Right Swimwear For You

As you all know we have been thinking about out travel plans for this year and although we do love a city breakwe also love a sun holiday where we can chill and relax. When it comes to beach holidays I used to always struggle choosing the right swimwear that suited my body shape. Finding the perfect swimwear can make all the difference in how confident and comfortable you feel. With so many styles, fits, and materials available, it can be overwhelming to know where to start. Over the years I've done a lot of shopping to help me find the perfect swimwear. If you are looking for some help then here’s a guide to help you choose the right swimwear for you, so you can feel fabulous and enjoy every moment on your next holiday.

Consider Your Body Shape

We all have different body shapes, and the key to choosing the right swimwear is finding a style that enhances your best features and makes you feel confident. Here are some common body shapes and the styles that complement them.

Hourglass
If you have a well-balanced figure with a defined waist, opt for swimsuits that highlight your shape. Bikinis with structured tops and high-waisted bottoms work well, as do belted one-pieces.

Pear-Shaped
If your hips are wider than your shoulders, look for swimsuits that draw attention upwards. Halter-neck tops, ruffled detailing, and bold prints on the upper half can balance your proportions.

Apple-Shaped
If you carry weight around your middle, swimsuits with tummy control panels and ruched designs can provide a flattering look. Tankinis and wrap-style swimsuits can also help define your waistline.

Athletic
If you have a straighter, more athletic build, consider swimsuits that create the illusion of curves. Padded tops, frills, and side ties on bikini bottoms can help add shape.

Fuller Bust
If you have a larger bust, support is key. Look for swimsuits with underwire, thicker straps, or built-in bra support to keep you comfortable and secure.

Smaller Bust
If you’d like to enhance your top half, opt for swimsuits with padding, ruffles, or embellishments to add volume.

Think About Comfort and Functionality

When choosing the right swimwear for my body type I do like to pick a set that is stylish as it is important but comfort and functionality matter to me just as much, especially if I plan to be active with the boys in the pool on slides or taking part in water aerobics.

If you’ll be swimming lengths in a pool, a sporty one-piece with secure straps is a great choice. For beach days with plenty of sunbathing, a stylish bikini or a flattering cut-out swimsuit might be ideal.

If you’re planning to visit a water park or go on water rides, consider a swimsuit with a secure fit to avoid wardrobe malfunctions. Adjustable straps and a good-quality fabric that stays in place will help you feel more comfortable.

Choose The Right Fabric

Swimwear comes in a variety of fabrics, and the right choice depends on how and where you’ll be wearing it. Personally I like to try a range of fabrics before I choose the right swimwear.

Nylon/Spandex
These materials are common in swimwear as they provide stretch, durability, and a comfortable fit.

Polyester
A great choice for longevity, polyester swimsuits are resistant to chlorine and fading, making them ideal for frequent swimmers.

Ribbed or Textured Fabrics
If you love a stylish, trendy look, ribbed or textured swimwear adds dimension and is flattering on different body types.

Pick Colours and Patterns That Suit You

The colour and pattern of your swimwear can make a big difference in how you feel wearing it. Darker colours like navy, black, and deep green can create a slimming effect however these colours attract the sun so you might find yourself heading to the shade.

Bright colours and bold prints add fun and personality. If you want to highlight a specific area, choose patterns or lighter colours in that section.

Try Before You Buy

This is me. If possible I always try swimwear on before purchasing.

There are a few things I look for
  • A snug but comfortable fit (swimwear often stretches slightly when wet).
  • Good support in the bust area.
  • Coverage that makes me feel secure and confident.
  • Adjustable straps or ties for a custom fit.

Don’t Forget Cover-ups and Accessories

I always buy a cover up for my beach / pool holidays. I find a stylish cover-up, sarong, or kaftan can add a chic touch to your swimwear and provide extra coverage when needed.

Other accessories I take on holiday with me are sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, and a good beach bag. I think accessories really help you to complete your look and keep you sun-safe.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right swimwear doesn’t have to be stressful. Focus on what makes you feel comfortable and confident, and don’t be afraid to try different styles. Whether you prefer a classic one-piece, a trendy bikini, or a sporty swimsuit, the right choice is the one that makes you feel your best.
