After our visit to Nice last year and Amsterdam in April we have decided we want to visit more cities over the next few years. When I googled 'city breaks with the kids' Copenhagen popped up as one of the most family friendly cities. After a little research we decided to visit the Danish capital. Copenhagen is a city brimming with history, culture, and unique experiences, so we decided to explore it with the Copenhagen Card.

With so many attractions included with the Copenhagen Card it was difficult to decide which card would be best for us so we made a list of attractions we wanted to see in Copenhagen and made our choice.

What Is The Copenhagen Card?

What is the Copenhagen Card?

The Copenhagen Card is a city pass that offers free admission to more than 80 attractions in Copenhagen and its surroundings.

There are two cards to choose from Discover and Hop.

Discover is the 'all-inclusive' card that covers admission to 80+ attractions, includes public transport including to and from the Airport.

Hop covers admission to 40+ attractions in the city centre and the use of the Hop On Hop Off Sightseeing Buses

With both cards you can choose to 24, 48 or 72 hours. If you want a little longer Discover offers 96 and 120 hours too.

Must-See Attractions Included with the Copenhagen Card

We chose to buy the Discover card which allowed us entry in to 80+ attractions. We knew we were never going to see them all, probably not even a quarter of them but it was the best option for us. Must see attractions will be down to your own personal preference but I thought I would let you know what we enjoyed and then if you decide to go ahead with the Copenhagen Card you can choose your own attractions.

Tivoli Gardens: A World of Wonder
Tivoli Gardens is one of the most famous attractions included with the Copenhagen Card. Established in 1843, Tivoli Gardens is one of the oldest amusement parks in the world. It's such a unique experience as it's located in the heart of Copenhagen city centre.

Whether you are 0-99 Tivoli has something for everyone. We were lucky to visit twice. We had a ride day and then visited in the evening when thousands of lights illuminate the grounds, creating a fairy-tale atmosphere. We also experienced their Summer illuminations on the water which was magical.

With the Copenhagen Card, you can enjoy free admission to Tivoli Gardens, allowing you to explore this iconic attraction without worrying about the cost. Although rides and special events require additional payment, the card makes it easy to experience the magic of Tivoli.

Stromma Canal Cruise: See Copenhagen from the Water
Copenhagen is a city defined by its waterways just like Amsterdam, and there’s no better way to see it than from the water. We took a Stromma Canal Cruise in Amsterdam and were pleasantly surprised when we found that a canal cruise in Copenhagen was included. The canal cruise takes you on a leisurely journey through the city’s picturesque canals, offering a unique perspective on some of Copenhagen’s most famous landmarks.

During the cruise, you will pass by the colourful buildings of Nyhavn, the historic Christiansborg Palace, and the iconic Little Mermaid statue. The tour is guided, with commentary available in multiple languages, providing fascinating insights into the city’s history, culture, and architecture.

The Stromma Canal Cruise was s a relaxing and scenic way to get to know Copenhagen, and was a bonus it was included with the Copenhagen Card.

Church Of Our Saviour: What A View
Our Saviour's is one of Denmark's most famous churches. Ever since the serpentine spire was inaugurated in 1752, is has been a popular pass time to climb the 400 steps to the top. On the last 150 external steps, you will, as far as the eye can see, experience one of the best views over Copenhagen with an overview of the city from every angle at 86 meters.

Unfortunately this attraction is one of the 2 attractions that you do have to pre book so when we turned up to enjoy the 400 steps to the top, it was fully booked. It was a shame but we did get to see a bride and groom who had just got married which was lovely.

Home Of Carlsberg Brewery Tour: Taste the History
We were not going to visit the Carlsberg Brewery Tour as we were travelling with our son however as it's one of the top attractions included with the Copenhagen Card we thought we would check it out. After reading about it it seems lots of children visit the attraction and we were so happy we did.

The tour takes you through the old brewhouse, where you’ll learn about the brewing process, the history of Carlsberg, and the brand’s impact on the global beer industry. One of the highlights of the tour is the chance to see the world’s largest collection of beer bottles, as well as the historic stables that are still home to Carlsberg’s beloved horses. It's a really interactive self guided tour which our son enjoyed.

The Copenhagen Card covers the cost of the tour and you get a free mini welcome drink and a full sized alcoholic or non-alcoholic drink at the end of the tour. This is an attraction that you do have to pre book to visit.

Museum of Illusions: A Mind-Bending Experience
If you’re looking for a fun and interactive experience, the Museum of Illusions is one of the attractions included with the Copenhagen Card that you shouldn’t miss. The attraction is located in the city centre and  is filled with mind-bending exhibits that challenge your perceptions and make you question reality.

The Museum of Illusions reminded me of an attraction you may find in Blackpool or somewhere similar. It features a variety of optical illusions, holograms, and interactive exhibits that are really entertaining and had us all laughing throughout.

We all enjoyed the Museum of Illusions and it's definitely a place I would recommend if you have time.

Amalienborg Palace: The Royal Residence
Amalienborg Castle is the official residence of the Danish royal family and is a prime example of rococo architecture.

The castle complex consists of four identical palaces surrounding an octagonal courtyard, and visitors can explore two of these palaces, which house the Amalienborg Museum. The museum offers an intimate look at the lives of Denmark’s monarchs, with exhibits featuring royal artefacts, portraits, and furniture. One of the highlights of a visit to Amalienborg is witnessing the Changing of the Guard ceremony, which takes place daily at noon. We were lucky to see the event and it was really interesting. Unfortunately the King and Queen were not at home so the experience wasn't as big as it usually is with music but still worth a watch.

Guinness World Records Museum: A World of Curiosities
We hadn't planned to visit the Guinness World Records Museum we just stumbled upon it as we walked through the town centre. As it was included with the Copenhagen Card we decided to pop in.

The museum features interactive exhibits that allow visitors to try their hand at breaking records, from the fastest reflexes to the longest jump. You can also marvel at displays showcasing the world’s tallest man, the heaviest weights ever lifted, and the most unusual talents. It’s a fun and quirky experience that’s perfect for families, offering something for visitors of all ages.

One of my highlights was John beating the daily high score of how many punches you can do on a punch bag in 1 minute. Well done John.

Making the Most of Your Copenhagen Card

With so many attractions included with the Copenhagen Card, it’s important to plan your itinerary carefully to ensure you make the most of your time in the city. Unfortunately we just didn't have time to squeeze everything we wanted to in the four days we were there. I would say for us we didn't make the most of the card however we still enjoyed the attractions we visited.

Here are a few tips to help you maximise your experience.

Start Early
Many attractions have limited opening hours, so it’s a good idea to start your day early to fit in as much as possible. I had a list of opening and closing times on my phone just so I had them to hand.

Group Nearby Attractions
Copenhagen is huge. The attractions are all spread out so to save time, plan your visits to nearby attractions on the same day. For example, you could combine a visit to the Museum of Illusions with a trip to Tivoli Gardens, as they are both located in the city centre.

Take Advantage of Public Transport
The Copenhagen Card includes unlimited access to public transport, so use it to move quickly between attractions without worrying about additional costs. We took the bus to the Home of Carlsberg as it's about 20 minutes from the centre.

Check for Special Events
Some attractions may host special events or temporary exhibitions that are worth checking out. Keep an eye on their websites for the latest updates. When we visited Tivoli in the evening there was a concert on. It looked like it was a very popular Danish band.

How Much Does Cost?

The cards range from 24-120 hrs so it will depend on how long you want to use the card for. Prices start at £57 for Adult and £32 for a child.

Would I Buy The Copenhagen Card If I Visited The City Again?

Probably. I feel we didn't make the most of it as there was so much more to see and do. As it was our first time we just explored the city but with so many attractions included with the Copenhagen Card it was impossible to fit them all in.

If you are planning a visit I definitely would buy a Copenhagen Card, plan your attractions but also be prepared to just wander the city enjoying all the beautiful buildings, restaurants and bars.

You can visit Copenhagen Card to find out more.
