Copenhagen, with its vibrant mix of historical charm and modern flair, is a city that beckons travellers to explore its every corner. While strolling through its streets and visiting its iconic landmarks on foot is a popular choice, there’s another way to experience the Danish capital that offers a unique and picturesque perspective, the Stromma Canal Cruise. We are no stranger to a Stromma Canal Cruise after enjoying a pizza cruise in Amsterdam earlier this year. The leisurely boat tour along Copenhagen's charming canals provides a perfect opportunity to take in the city’s beauty, whether you’re a solo traveler, a couple, a family, or a group of friends.

Boarding the Stromma Canal Cruise: Two Convenient Locations
One of the best things about the Stromma Canal Cruise is its flexibility. You can board the boat from two different locations in the city. Nyhavn, the bustling and colourful harbour area or Ved Stranden, a central location that’s equally convenient. Despite the different boarding points, the duration and route of the cruise remain exactly the same, ensuring that no matter where you start, you’ll enjoy the full experience.
What to Expect on the Cruise
The Stromma Canal Cruise lasts approximately one hour, during which you’ll be taken on a scenic journey through Copenhagen’s extensive canal system. The boats are open-top in the summer, allowing you to soak up the sun and enjoy unobstructed views of the city’s skyline. In cooler months, the boats are equipped with glass roofs and blankets to keep you warm and comfortable, making this a year-round activity. Unfortunately the rain got us when we were on the open water however our guide was very quick to hand out ponchos to help stop us from getting wet.
Attractions Along the Way
As you sail along the waterways, you’ll pass by some of Copenhagen’s most famous sights and landmarks, each offering a glimpse into the city’s rich history and contemporary culture. Some of the highlights for us were
The Little Mermaid
This iconic statue, inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s beloved fairy tale, is one of Copenhagen’s most photographed attractions. Although it’s a modest figure, its cultural significance makes it a must-see. We saw the statue from the water however we did have the opportunity to visit it using the Stromma hop on hop off sightseeing bus but we decided not to. Really wish we did now as it's such an iconic landmark.
Amalienborg Palace
The official residence of the Danish royal family, Amalienborg is an impressive sight with its stately architecture. The cruise provides a unique vantage point to admire the palace and its elegant surroundings. I just wanted to add that if you do get the chance to actually visit the palace, please do. It's so pretty and the changing of the guard ceremony everyday at 12 is not to be missed.
Christiansborg Palace
Home to the Danish Parliament, the Supreme Court, and the Prime Minister’s Office, Christiansborg is a symbol of Denmark’s political power. The palace’s location on the islet of Slotsholmen makes it a striking sight from the water.
The Black Diamond
This modern extension of the Royal Danish Library is a striking contrast to the city’s historic buildings. Its sleek, black glass façade gleams in the sunlight, reflecting both the water and the sky.
Nyhavn
If you chose to cruise from Nyhavn you will get another chance to admire the brightly coloured buildings as the cruise circles back. It’s a perfect way to end the tour.
Choosing Your Cruise Experience
Stromma offers different cruise options to suit various preferences. For instance, you can choose between cruises that have a live guide or those that provide pre-recorded commentary. The live guides are often locals who share interesting anecdotes and lesser-known facts about Copenhagen, making the experience more engaging and personal. On the other hand, if you prefer to explore at your own pace or listen in your preferred language, the pre-recorded commentary is available in multiple languages, including English, German, French, and Spanish, ensuring that everyone can follow along comfortably.
Convenience with the Copenhagen Card
If you’re visiting Copenhagen and planning to see multiple attractions, the Copenhagen Card is an excellent investment. This city pass grants you free entry to 80+ attractions, including the Stromma Canal Cruise. Not only does this save you money, but it also makes the experience even more convenient—just show your card, hop on the boat, and you’re ready to explore.
Perfect for Every Traveller
The Stromma Canal Cruise is an ideal activity for all types of travellers. For solo adventurers, it’s a relaxing way to see the city and capture some beautiful photographs without the hustle and bustle of a large group. Couples will appreciate the romantic ambiance of the canals, especially as the boat gently glides through the water, offering intimate views of the city’s most picturesque spots.
Families will find the cruise to be an enjoyable and educational experience for all ages. The sights are sure to captivate children and adults alike, and the commentary provides interesting insights that can spark conversations long after the tour ends. For friends travelling together, the cruise offers a chance to sit back, relax, and take in the sights while chatting and enjoying each other’s company.
The Stromma Canal Cruise is more than just a boat ride—it’s a beautiful Copenhagen experience that showcases the city’s beauty from a unique perspective. Whether you’re drawn by the historical landmarks, the modern architectural marvels, or simply the serene charm of the canals, this cruise offers something for everyone. With its convenient boarding locations, flexible options, and inclusion in the Copenhagen Card, it’s a must-do activity that promises to leave you with lasting memories of your time in Denmark’s capital. So, whether you’re traveling alone, with a loved one, or with a group, make sure to include the Stromma Canal Cruise in your Copenhagen itinerary. You won’t be disappointed.
