Why Canada? Picking the Right Time to Visit

When planning a family holiday, the first step is deciding when to go. Canada is a country that offers a variety of experiences depending on the time of year you visit, and it’s important to know what you’re looking for.

Winter
If your family enjoys skiing, snowboarding, or just experiencing a snowy wonderland, visiting during the winter months will give you access to some of the best ski resorts in the world, such as Whistler or Banff.

Spring
This time is ideal if you prefer milder temperatures and fewer crowds. You can see the country's natural beauty blossom during the spring, and prices may be lower than during peak travel times.

Summer
Canada in the summer is perfect for outdoor exploration, especially for families who love nature. Hiking, camping, and sightseeing are at their best, with warm weather and long daylight hours.

Autumn
The fall season is known for its spectacular foliage, particularly in Eastern Canada. It's a beautiful time to go on a road trip or enjoy quieter attractions in smaller towns.

For us, summer would be ideal, as we absolutely love outdoor activities and seeing new places so we would love the nice warm, sunny weather.

But for families who love winter sports or the magic of a snowy landscape, planning a family holiday during Canada’s winter months could be the perfect fit.

Choosing Family-Friendly Destinations

One of the great things about Canada is its variety of destinations, from bustling cities to serene wilderness. When planning a family holiday, it’s important to find locations that offer plenty of activities for both kids and adults. Here are some of the top family-friendly spots:

Toronto
A vibrant city full of attractions, including the CN Tower, Ripley’s Aquarium, and the Royal Ontario Museum. If your family loves theme parks, Canada’s Wonderland just outside the city is a must-visit. Plus, Toronto is only a short drive from Niagara Falls, which is a fantastic family day trip.

John has always wanted to visit Niagara Falls, it's definitely a bucket list destination for him.

Vancouver
Surrounded by mountains and the Pacific Ocean, Vancouver is an ideal destination for families who enjoy both city and nature. Spend a day cycling around Stanley Park, visit the Vancouver Aquarium, or take a gondola ride up Grouse Mountain for amazing views.

Vancouver sounds the perfect choice for me as you all know I love seeing a new place from above so a ride up Grouse Mountain sounds ideal.

Banff National Park
For families that love the outdoors, Banff offers incredible scenery, wildlife, and opportunities for hiking, canoeing, or simply soaking in the beauty of the Canadian Rockies. Don’t forget to check out Lake Louise for its stunning turquoise waters.

Montreal and Quebec City
If you're interested in exploring Canada’s French-speaking regions, these two cities offer a mix of culture, history, and modern attractions. They’re also very family-friendly, with plenty of parks, museums, and festivals that children will enjoy.

Canada is such a vast country that deciding where to go can be overwhelming. As part of our own planning, we’d likely combine a city stay with some time in nature, giving us the best of both worlds.

Organising Family Activities

When planning a family holiday to Canada, it's essential to organize activities that cater to everyone’s interests. Depending on the regions you choose, there are countless family-friendly activities to include in your itinerary.

Whale Watching
Along both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, whale-watching tours are popular. Seeing these majestic animals in their natural habitat would be a highlight for any family.

Visiting National Parks
Canada has an incredible number of national parks, many of which are perfect for families. Banff and Jasper in Alberta, or Prince Edward Island National Park in the east, offer easy trails, wildlife sightings, and picnic spots.

Museums and Cultural Experiences
Cities like Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver have interactive museums and cultural attractions that kids will enjoy. Many museums offer exhibits specifically designed for children, making them fun and educational.

Adventure Parks
For thrill-seeking families, outdoor adventure parks and zip-lining are great options. Canada has many parks that offer everything from tree-top obstacle courses to whitewater rafting.

We’ve found that blending outdoor adventures with museum visits works well for our family. It gives us a chance to explore while keeping our days varied and exciting.

Consider Travel Logistics

Since Canada is the second-largest country in the world, travelling between cities and attractions often involves long distances. It’s essential to consider how you’ll get around when planning a family holiday.

Domestic Flights
If you're traveling across the country, flights between major cities like Toronto and Vancouver can save time and energy, especially with kids in tow.

Trains
VIA Rail offers scenic train routes that travel through the heart of the country. This can be a great option for families who want to take in the landscape without the hassle of driving.

Car Rental
For more flexibility, especially if you plan to explore national parks, renting a car is the best option. It gives you the freedom to stop at smaller towns and scenic viewpoints along the way.

For our family, a combination of flights and rail trips would work best. We’d love to explore some of Canada’s national parks by car however neither of us have drove abroad before.

Budgeting and Travel Insurance

Planning a family holiday to Canada can be a significant investment, so creating a budget early on is crucial. Here are a few tips to help manage costs:

Book Flights Early
Canada is a long-haul destination, and booking flights well in advance can save a lot of money.

Accommodation
Consider staying in family-friendly accommodations like vacation rentals or hotels that offer kitchen facilities, as eating out every day can add up.

Travel Insurance
Make sure to purchase comprehensive travel insurance that covers any potential medical issues, cancellations, or outdoor activities like skiing or hiking.

When planning a family holiday, budgeting properly and securing travel insurance gives you peace of mind, allowing you to focus on enjoying your time together.

Canada has so much to offer families looking for adventure, culture, and natural beauty. While we haven’t made it there just yet, it’s definitely high on our list for future holidays. With careful planning, you can create an itinerary that ensures a smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone. Whether you're exploring its iconic cities, venturing into the wilderness, or discovering its coastlines, planning a family holiday to Canada is sure to be a fun filled adventure.
