A Fantasmagorical Adventure: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at the Palace Theatre, Manchester

Disclosure - We were invited to see Chitty Chitty Bang Bang for the purpose of this post. All thoughts, opinions and photographs are our own.

Growing up I loved all the classic musicals such as Calamity Jane, The King and I, Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. I would watch them that much I knew all the words to the songs and even the script. I think it's those movies that have made me enjoy the theatre so much. I love musicals, they are a feel good night out and you can't help but have a smile on your face. There’s something truly special about a classic musical brought to life on stage, and watching Chitty Chitty Bang Bang on tour at The Palace Theatre Manchester made me laugh, cry and feel like I was a little girl again.

There's no denying that Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is a family favourite and it certainly showed as the whole audience clapped, cheered and sang along throughout the show.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is based on the 1968 film and adapted from Ian Fleming’s novel. It's a delightful mix of adventure, humour, and heartwarming moments. I last saw Chitty Chitty Bang Bang on tour in 2016 with an unbelievable cast and I was worried that this cast may not live up to my expectations. They did! In so many ways I thought the characters where perfectly cast this time around and brought their own unique acting to the show.

A Nostalgic Story That Captivates All Ages

The story of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is one that has captured the hearts of audiences for generations. It follows the eccentric yet brilliant inventor Caractacus Potts, his two lovely children, and the charming Truly Scrumptious as they embark on a journey with their car, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

This latest touring production does a remarkable job of honouring the original story while injecting fresh energy into the characters and staging. The production team has masterfully maintained the nostalgic feel of the film while modernising elements to enhance the theatrical experience. Fans of the original will appreciate this adaptation, while newcomers will be swept up in the adventure and charm.

Outstanding Performances

A production such as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang relies heavily on its cast, and this ensemble did not disappoint. The role of Caractacus Potts, originally played by Dick Van Dyke in the film, is a demanding one, requiring both strong vocals and comedic timing. Ore Oduba brings warmth and charisma to his role as a loving father. Ore's vocals were gentle, sweet and mesmerising. I could listen to him sing all day. The young actors playing Jeremy (Charlie Banks) and Jemima Potts (Lara Simon) were endearing and genuine, and the chemistry between the three of them made their family feel authentic.

Truly Scrumptious portrayed by Ellie Nunn brought strength and independence to the character while maintaining her whimsical nature. Her solo numbers are beautifully performed, and her interactions with Caractacus are so sweet and bring a genuine romantic feel to the show.

A character I would have loved to see more of was Grandpa Potts played by Liam Fox. Just like the film Grandpa Potts spends most of his time going on 'adventures' so flits on and off the stage, however when he's on he definitely brings light and humour and was a joy to watch.

The villains of the show, Baron and Baroness Bomburst played by Martin Callaghan and Jenny Gayner are hilariously over-the-top, providing plenty of comedic moments. Their exaggerated antics and humorous interactions make them an entertaining duo that both children and adults can enjoy.

Boris and Goran played by Adam Stafford and Michael Joseph were everything I wanted from the Vulgaria spies and more. They brought so much fun to the stage and had the audience in heaps of laughter. Perfect casting in my opinion.

Of course, no Chitty Chitty Bang Bang production would be complete without a villain and the Child Catcher is just that.  With a chilling presence and eerie movements, Charlie Brooks kept the character true to the film and the child catcher remains as terrifying as ever.

Stunning Stage Effects & The Flying Car

One of the most anticipated elements of any Chitty Chitty Bang Bang production is the flying car, and although I had seen it before I was still overwhelmed and emotional. It did bring a tear to my eye. The technical execution of Chitty’s flight is seamless, creating a genuinely magical moment as the car lifts off the stage.

The musical numbers in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang are some of the most beloved songs in film history and I know every single person in the audience knew the all the words to Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and it was lovely to see everyone singing and clapping along.

The ensemble cast brings the energy to numbers like 'Me Ol’ Bamboo' and 'Toot Sweets'.
