For me November is the start of the Christmas countdown. Once Halloween and Bonfire Night are over I can start to focus on Christmas and getting myself organised for the big day. One of my favourite things to do is shop the Black Friday sales. Years ago it would just be on the day that you could grab a bargain however thanks to the internet, Black Friday sales start to pop up at the beginning of November with lots of bargains and offers perfect for Christmas. I have been browsing the Books2Door Black Friday sale and they have lots of books for all ages all reduced and also they are offering an extra 10% off their top picks with a minimum spend of £30.

I love buying books and they do make the perfect Christmas present and here are some of our favourite offers from the Books2Door Black Friday sale.

colleen hoover books

Colleen Hoover is a very popular author at the moment after the huge success of her books 'It Ends With Us' and then follow up sequel 'It Starts With Us'. However Colleen Hoover has a wide range of books that can be read as a collection or stand alone books.

The Maybe Someday series is features Maybe Someday, Maybe Not and Maybe Now and perfect for readers like me to like to curl up with a 'will they, won't they' book.

the dark tower boxset by Stephen King

Now for John he only really likes to read books from one author, Stephen King. He has tried so many books over the years but he doesn't get past the first few chapters before giving up. Luckily Stephen King has a huge range of books and his Dark Tower series box set features 8 books which will definitely keep him busy.

Books in the set are
1. The Gunslinger
2. The Drawing of the Three
3. The Waste Lands
4. Wizard and Glass
5. Wolves of the Calla
6. Song of Susannah
7. The Dark Tower
8. The Wind through the Keyhole

These books are different to Stephen Kings usual writing style however after reading lots of reviews I know they will be a hit.

a selection of Diary of the Wimpy Kid Books

Little J also enjoys reading, not as much as I would like him to however he will read when encouraged. A favourite of big J's when he was the same age as little J is now was The Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

When browsing the Black Friday sales section I got a shock when I found a Diary of a Wimpy Kid with 15 books inside. I had no idea there were that many now.

Books in the set are

Rodrick Rules
The Last Straw
Dog Days

This is just 3 ideas from a massive range of books in the Black Friday sales section at Books2Door. If you would like to browse what books are available you use the dropdown menu and search by author, genre, type, age and lots more.

Halloween Books For Adults From Books2Door

Disclosure - This is a collaborative post. Books2Door referral scheme gives us both £5 off our orders by buying through this link

The spooky season for me starts as soon as September has finished. October is the month that I like to transform our house with pumpkins decorations, orange and brown furnishing and a smell of pumpkin spice in the air. It's also one of my favourite seasons to snuggle up with a book and I am currently reading some new Halloween books for adults from Books2Door. If like me you enjoy a scary story then these will be a perfect choice.

Disney's Twisted Tales

You may already know I am a huge Disney fan and whilst I love the heroes and princesses I am also drawn to the villains in Disney movies. Who doesn't love a good baddie? The idea behind the Twisted Tales series is that the Villains are the main characters and it's their storyline that is the main attraction. They are a great read and perfect for Disney lovers like me.

Disney Twisted Tales Vol. 1

1. A Whole New World
2. Once Upon a Dream
3. As Old as Time

There are 3 stories to enjoy with the Disney Twisted Tales Vol.1 collection. The stories are based around Aladdin, Sleeping Beauty and Beauty and The Beast.

Disney Twisted Tales Vol. 2

1. Reflection
2. Mirror, Mirror
3. Part of Your World

If Vol.1 isn't enough you can also enjoy Vol.2 of Disney's Twisted Tales following the stories of Mulan, Snow White and The Little Mermaid.

The collection is perfect for both young adults and older. They are spooky rather than scary with lots of Disney magic in there too.

You can buy Vol. 1 and 2 combined which is cheaper than buying both separately.

a collection of 4 stephen king books

Stephen King - Movies Collection

Stephen King has been a well-known figure in horror and science fiction writing for decades. His first release was Carrie, originally published in 1974. That was quickly followed by Salem’s Lot in 1975 and The Shining in 1977. There have been many adaptations of King’s novels over the years. This collection contains 4 of the most notable titles that were adapted onto the big screen, The Shining, Pet Sematary, IT and Doctor Sleep, Stephen King - The Movies Collection.

Stephen King has always been John's favourite author and although he has read most of his books many times he will always go back to his favourites.

Preparing For KS2 SATS with Books2Door

Disclosure - This is a collaborative post. Books2Door referral scheme gives us both £5 off our orders by buying through this link

This year we are heading in to our final year of primary school. I don't feel ready for secondary school open days, applications and years 6 SATS as it's all come round so quickly. However I do want to prepare little J as much as possible and we have ordered a selection of books and revision cards that will be perfect for preparing for his KS2 SATS.

Ks2 sats revision books

Preparing For KS2 SATS

KS2 SATs are so important and a huge part of year 6 in primary school. Having resources at home can really help boost your child's knowledge and also confidence. Sitting down to take a test can be a daunting experience so practising at home can help them get used to the format and also the time limit.

Here are a few of the resources we will be using this year.

New KS2 Complete SATS Practice Papers Pack 1: Science, Maths & English

The KS2 Mixed Practice Paper Pack  contains 6 full sets of realistic tests - two Maths SATS papers, and two English SATS papers, plus two Science papers. When I did exams I always found test papers were the best revision for me. I found it really hard to revise by reading. I would get fed up. I'm hoping these papers will help little J put in to practice everything that he's learnt at school.

I also like that this pack has a Parents' Guide included. Everything parents need to know about the SATS. It's a great guide that answered a few of my questions.

KS2 English SATS Revision Book - Ages 10-11

This KS2 English Revision Book contains everything pupils need to know for the tough SATS tests in Year 6. It's filled to the brim with clear, concise study notes and examples on every topic, plus practice questions at the end of each section to cement what pupils have learnt.

English is the subject Little J struggles with the most. They say you are either good at English or Maths and he is definitely our little maths whizz, so English is the subject he will need to revise for the most.

KS2 English SATS Revision Question Cards: Grammar, Punctuation & Spelling

These KS2 Question Cards are the perfect way to test pupils on their Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar knowledge. This pack contains over 60 cards of fun, informal questions and helpful tips - ideal for honing those all-important KS2 SPaG skills. Challenge sections throughout the pack stretch pupils and deepen their understanding of grammar. Answers can be found on the backs of the cards.

I think flash cards are perfect and a great way to revise without staring at books. They are quick and portable and we can use them on car journeys when we are out and about.

KS2 English SAT Buster 10-Minute Tests: Reading - Book 1

This book of SAT Buster 10-Minute tests is fantastic for splitting KS2 English SATS preparation into bite-sized chunks. Little J's attention span isn't great so I'm hoping that 10 minute sessions might help him take in more than he would if we made him sit for 1 hour at a time.

Each set of quick tests includes reading questions in the style of the real SATS, with texts that progress in difficulty throughout each set. The tests are broken up with fun puzzle pages, so pupils can practise their English skills in other contexts. Answers are included, along with a handy progress chart to help work out which level children are working at.

KS2 English SAT Buster 10-Minute Tests: Grammar, Punctuation & Spelling - Book 1

Bursting with bite-sized practice tests, this book is a brilliant way to split SATS preparation into manageable chunks. Each set of quick tests covers grammar, punctuation and spelling with questions in the style of the real SATS including audio tests for spelling (you can either read these out from the pull-out transcripts or access free online audio files on the CGP website). Answers are included, along with a handy progress chart to help work out which level children are working at.

Again the 10 minute tests will be perfect for little J as I know he wont sit for much longer than that at a time and as they are so short he can manage his progress quicker.

Back To School With Books2Door

Disclosure - This is a collaborative post. Books2Door referral scheme gives us both £5 off our orders by buying through this link - Last Updated August '23

I’ve said it before but September really is my favourite month. September reminds me that my favourite time of year is on the way. Autumn is just around the corner, we will soon be visiting Alton Towers for Oktoberfest, then before we know it we will be pumpkin picking, setting off fireworks and then Christmas will soon be here. Working in an Education setting also means that September is the beginning of a new school year for me. I really enjoy meeting the new children, getting to know them and preparing for our school year together.

A selection of books on a book shelf

However I haven’t always liked September, when I was a child September meant back to school with the uncertainty of a new teacher, new classroom and possibly even new friends. So September can be a nervous and anxious time for some and whilst teachers and carers will do all they can to settle children into their new routine, as a parent we can also help them before September arrives.

Whether our little ones are starting nursery, reception, going into a new school year in primary school, starting secondary school, sixth form, college or even university we can help them and prepare them for their new adventure ahead.

If our little ones are nervous or anxious about what lies ahead we can talk to them but also reading stories can be a huge help. Books2Door have a lovely range of books and resources that can help children prepare for the new school year. These are a few of my favourites.

Lucy and Tom at School

Lucy and Tom at School by Shirley Hughes
Lucy has her school things ready. She has a new grey skirt, a pair of brown shoes, a pencil case and a satchel. Tom wishes that he had a satchel too. Full of warmth and good humour, the happy simplicity of childhood is captured in this richly illustrated, classic picture book about two young children’s first experience of school.

starting school book

Starting School by Allan Ahlberg
Following a number of children's first experiences, this picture book takes children right from their very first day to the end of the school year. This reassuring read will support even the most nervous school-starter, exploring each emotion, from fear to excitement, with care. The perfect read to start a conversation about any pre-school nerves, packed with playful illustrations and easy to understand explanations. This is a book that you'll want to read again and again - far beyond the last day of the school year.

No Worries : Your Guide To Starting Secondary Schoo

No Worries : Your Guide To Starting Secondary School by Jenny Alexander
No Worries is the ultimate secondary school survival guide, with tips, quizzes and jokes to help children prepare. What if I've got the wrong stuff? What if I don't fit in? What if the older kids are horrible to me? Starting secondary school can be an exciting time - it's a great adventure but sometimes, before you go, you can get a touch of the 'what ifs'. You may be feeling anxious or stressed about leaving primary school. No Worries is full of information about going up from primary to secondary school and covers all of the big worries and anxieties. With practical hints and tips, jokes and quizzes for finding your way around, making new friends, social media and staying on top of homework, this fully-revised edition of Going Up! is the essential no-worries guide to starting secondary school.

These are just a few of my personal favourites however you can browse a whole range of books by searching Back to School
