When you become a parent it's the happiest day of your life but it can also be the scariest. Our little ones enter the world without any guide or instruction booklet and it's up to us to figure out how to make sure we look after them to the best of our ability. We then spend years making sure we protect them from harm and worrying about them is constant. There are some situations that parents may struggle with and one is starting up conversations with their children about their feelings. Let's Talk have created a series of books which are perfect conversation starters amongst adults and children to support their social, emotional and mental wellbeing

series of Let's Talk book

Not a moment goes by without us feeling something.  Whether it's happiness, sadness, anger or anxiety, different feelings visit us all the time. This is the perfect picture book to help children understand and manage their feelings early on. Offering child-friendly strategies for dealing with feelings, this book looks at 12 complex emotions and makes them simple for children.

what's worrying you book

What's Worrying You? is a book all about helping children understand their worries, and what to do when they feel overwhelmed by their thoughts and feelings.

We all have worries now and then, but sometimes worries can feel like they're getting bigger and bigger, like you can't control them anymore. What do you do then?

Each page takes the child step-by-step through different worry scenarios, such as falling out with a friend, getting in trouble at school, or feeling like no one is listening. It talks about how they might feel, what they might think, and what could help them to ease the anxiety.

the same but different book

The Same but Different explores the ways in which we're all unique as well as the similarities we all share. Using everyday examples, clear explanations and colourful illustrations by Sarah Jennings, this book encourages children to rejoice in their differences. After all, imagine how boring the world would be if everyone was exactly the same!

This book covers lots of ways in which we're different, including how we look, where we live, the languages we speak, what our families are like and what we believe in. It's the perfect resource for starting important conversations with children about diversity and inclusion, with topics such as race, disability, gender, sexual orientation and religion.

Will you be my friend book

Will You Be My Friend? is ideal for starting conversations about friendship and includes a guide for parents and carers about supporting a child if they are having friendship difficulties.

This book is both humorous and charming, and prompts children to discuss the idea of friendship with parents and peers. Learning to build and maintain friendships also helps children with important life skills such as sharing, negotiating, empathising and that all-important apology when things go wrong.

Written by Molly Potter and illustrated by Sarah Jennings the Let's Talk series is such a nice and relaxed why to approach the difficult to talk about situations. The series is aimed at children aged 4+ and would be perfect to read together. Social, emotional and mental wellbeing is such an important part of our life and should be talked about more.

Experience the Venice Carnival
The Venice Carnival is one of the most famous events in Italy, attracting visitors from all over the world. It usually takes place in February, leading up to Lent. Imagine streets filled with people donning elaborate masks and costumes, creating a magical atmosphere. The city becomes a stage for performances, parades, and masquerade balls. Don't miss the chance to witness the grandeur of the Venetian celebrations – it's truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Hit the Slopes in the Italian Alps

After an exhilarating day on the slopes, cozy up in a mountain lodge and enjoy hearty Italian cuisine by the fire.

Soak Up Some Culture in Florence
Florence, the cradle of the Renaissance, is a treasure trove of art and history. With fewer tourists around, you can take your time exploring the Uffizi Gallery, home to masterpieces by Leonardo da Vinci and Botticelli, without the usual crowds. Stroll across the Ponte Vecchio, visit the stunning Florence Cathedral, and cap off your day with gelato, even if it's a bit chilly outside – it's always gelato season in Italy!

Celebrate Valentine's Day in Verona
Verona, the setting for Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet," becomes even more romantic in February. The city hosts 'Verona in Love,' a festival dedicated to love and lovers each year. The streets are adorned with heart-shaped lanterns, and there are concerts, markets, and poetry readings. You can also leave a love note on Juliet’s wall or visit the famous balcony. It's the perfect destination for couples looking for a romantic getaway.

There are also workshops, sculptures made of chocolate, and plenty of opportunities to buy gifts for your loved ones (or for yourself!).

Explore the Quiet Beauty of Cinque Terre
The five picturesque villages of Cinque Terre are a sight to behold year-round, but visiting in February means you'll share the stunning views with fewer tourists. Wander through the colourful houses perched on rugged cliffs, hike the scenic trails connecting the villages, or simply enjoy the tranquil ambiance of the Mediterranean Sea. Attend the Historic Carnevale di Ivrea
Head to the town of Ivrea in northern Italy to witness the historic Carnevale di Ivrea, known for its unique and passionate Battle of the Oranges. This event symbolizes the fight for freedom and involves teams throwing oranges at each other, representing ancient combat. Pretty Woman The Musical Review

I have waited what seems an eternity since receiving my tickets as a present to see Pretty Woman The Musical and I can honestly say it was worth the wait. I always worry watching the stage show version of such an iconic movie such as Dirty Dancing and The Rocky Horror Show but they are always done so well and Pretty Woman The Musical was everything I had hoped it would be.

pretty woman the musical poster

I'm sure you all know the plot to the movie Pretty Woman but if you don't then Pretty Woman is a true fairytale. Vivian works on Hollywood Boulevard with her room mate Kit as they try to make enough money to pay rent. Edward is a successful business man who finds himself in need of some directions to his hotel room at the prestigious Regent Beverly Wilshire.

What starts as just a one time thing, Edward and Vivian are drawn to each other and after making a business deal to spend the next 6 days together we watch as their love for each other grows and grows and the unlikely couple soon seem a perfect match.

I knew I was going to love Pretty Woman The Musical as it is one of my favourite movies but I absolutely loved the songs. I thought both Edward and Vivian really showcased their vocal talents but for me Edward stole the show. His singing was effortless and I'm glad he got the chance to showcase his talent throughout the show. Filling Richard Gere's shoes is a hard task, but he did the job!

Murder In The Dark Review

Disclosure - we were invited to watch Murder in the Dark. All thoughts and opinions are our own.

I have loved going to the theatre since I was a little girl and it's only until the past few years that I have started to enjoy shows that are not musicals. Musicals have always been my favourite but since watching The Mouse Trap it opened a new door for me and now I have seen a wide range of stage shows and I hope to continue to enjoy them as much as I have. This week we went along to one of our favourite theatre venues in the North West, The Lowry to see Murder In The Dark.

Murder in the dark programme

I'm not a fan of reading reviews of theatre shows before I've seen them however I had heard that Murder In The Dark was a show that would keep you on the edge of your seat with an atmospheric staging and plenty of jump scares. It certainly did have me jumping in my seat a few times and the staging was the perfect setting for this show.

The show takes place on New Year’s Eve, when the 'has been' pop sensation Danny Sierra crashes his car on a deserted road. Luckily Mrs Bateman is soon to the rescue and she brings the famous but troubled singer Danny Sierra and his dysfunctional family to an isolated holiday cottage in rural England. As soon as she shows them to her cottage the atmosphere becomes spooky with lights turning off and on sporadically as well as the TV.

Over the course of the night we dig deep in to Danny's past as he is joined in the cottage with his much younger girlfriend Sarah, his ex wife Rebecca, his late teens son Jake and his brother who he was once in a band with. We find out that the choices and the sacrifices Danny made in the past will always come back to haunt him.

Murder In The Dark is touring the UK with a list of venues and dates below.

Jan 23 - Jan 27 2024 , Salford, The Lowry

Mar 25 - Mar 30 2024, Glasgow, the Pavilion Theatre

At the moment the show is only touring until the end of March 2024 however I am sure it will continue beyond this date as it really is a great watch and a great cast including Tom Chambers and Susie Blake.

Who Killed Mia? Review

Disclosure - Who Killed Mia? was gifted to us however we were not asked to review. All thoughts, opinions and photographs are our own. This post contains affiliate links

Over the past few years both John and I have become really interested in watching murder mysteries and crime series on TV. It's not something we have ever been in to before however since watching a program on Netflix it now suggests other shows and we have been hooked. Another interest that's popped up is games. We love Escape Room type games and we have done quite a few murder mysteries games too. When we received Who Killed Mia? for inclusion in our Christmas Gift Guide I knew that we would love it as it combines two things we love and not only that Who Killed Mia? boasts that it is a modern murder mystery which will have us searching for evidence both paper based and digitally.

Who Killed Mia? game box

Who Killed Mia?
Who Killed Mia? asks you to do exactly what it says on the box - find out who killed Mia? Mia Star is an influencer who has took the world by storm. On the night of a very prestigious award show Mia livestreams from her dressing room to millions of fans. What no one expected is that Mia would be brutally murdered live whilst her fan watch in horror.

Game Play
Before game play can begin you will need to scan the QR code so that you can watch Mia's murder. You will get to see Mia alive before her murder and then it's time to get your thinking caps on as you open the three lots of evidence envelope where you read witness statements, news clipping, view photographs and even read emails. Each envelope is marked with a day on it, Day One, Day Two and Day Three. You cannot open the next envelope until you have successfully completed the one before.

Once you have gathered all your evidence and you are sure you know who the killer is you can then make your accusation and get justice for Mia.

Our Thoughts
Who Killed Mia? was a game like no other we have played before. Having evidence both paper based and digital really did bring it right up to date and it's the most modern murder mystery game we have completed. As it does have some digital elements you do need a smartphone device which was fine for us. There were over 40 pieces of evidence to go through and like other games some are red herrings and not needed but that just adds to the fun. You don't want it to be too easy and over quickly. In terms of time needed to play I do think that all depends on who's playing. We did it together and it took us around 90 minutes but I've read people have played in a bigger group and it's took less time or you could play Who Killed Mia? on your own if you wanted too as it's suitable for any amount of players.

We loved Who Killed Mia? and I will definitely be keeping my eye out for any similar games from the makers What Do You Meme?
