20 Ideas To Keep You Busy In January

January is probably most famous for new starts. New years resolutions are a good way to give yourself a kick up the bum. Whether you want to try a new hobby, lose weight or anything else January is a great starting point as it's the beginning of a whole new year. I am looking forward to keeping busy in January and here are a few ideas.

Happy New Year
Dry January (1st-31st)
If you are still feeling the effects of your Christmas drinking then you can take part in Dry January. Ditch the hangovers, reduce your waistline and save lots of money too.

Make Some Resolutions (1st-31st)
Are you making any resolutions this year? Now is the time to write them down and start the year fresh.

Start Saving For Christmas (1st-31st)
I know Christmas has just gone but now is the time to start thinking ahead and planning for next Christmas. Check out our Ideas To Help You Save For Christmas post for lots of hints and tips.

Walk Your Dog Month (1st-31st)
A great excuse to head outside for fresh air. This month is walk your dog month.

cup of tea
Catch Some Extra zzz's (3rd)
Festival of Sleep Day is designed to give everyone some extra shut eye. This is almost near impossible though if you have kids... What's sleep again?

Bye Bye Christmas (6th)
If you follow the 12 days of Christmas then you will be able to take your decorations down on the 6th January. We usually take ours down after New Year so we can start the year fresh.

Back To Normal (6th)
Over the Christmas holidays there is always that period of time when you actually have no idea what day it is. I love being home with my family over Christmas but I also love that feeling when the kids go back to school and I return to work and we can have some normality and routine again.

Friday Night is Date Night (10th)
At Christmas time we spend some much time and energy making others happy that sometimes we need to just take a step back. Why not arrange a date night with your partner even if it's just watching a movie or cooking a meal for each other.

Houseplant Week (13th-19th)
I have never understood houseplants but I know how popular they are and how much people enjoy having them in their home. If you want to start a new house plant collection then you can start today as it's officially Houseplant week.

Almost Half Way There (15th)
We made it! We are half way through one of the worst months of the year. It's Wednesday let's celebrate and maybe order a takeaway for tea.

holding a cup of tea
Brew Monday (15th)
Staying in touch with family and friends can get you through even the darkest of days. Brew Monday has been created by the Samaritans to encourage people to stay connected even if just virtually. Pop the kettle on and have a cuppa with a friend or family member.

Blue Monday (15th)
The third Monday of January is known as Blue Monday and is supposed to be the most depressing of days when people suffer from post Christmas blues. Why not get in touch with a friend or plan something for yourself and family to keep you busy.

Winnie The Pooh Day (18th)
Today we appreciate the loveable and huggable bear, Winnie The Pooh. Read one of the many stories of the adventures of Pooh in the Hundred Acre Wood or head to Disney+ for lots of bear adventures.

Penguin Awareness Day (20th)
This year Penguin Awareness Day is celebrated on 20th January and whether you are a penguin lover or not it's sad to hear that each year penguin numbers are dwindling. Celebrating Penguin Awareness Day or National Penguin Day can help support penguins by donating to charities or you can visit your local zoo to find out more about penguins.

Red Squirrel Appreciation Day (21st)
Red Squirrel Appreciation Day is celebrated on January 21st. It's a day to appreciate red squirrels, a shy and solitary native species of Britain, and to learn how to help protect them. Do you know where you can see Red Squirrels local to you?

It's Cold Outside (25th-26th)
Towards the end of January heading in to February it's so cold outside and some places may even have snow. It's natural to want to stay in your PJ's all day in front of the fire watching movies but it's also good to get outdoors. Pop on your coat, hat, scarf and gloves and head out on an adventure this weekend. Being outside in the open air is great not only for your physical health but your mental health too.

Burns Night (25th)
Burns Night marks the anniversary of Robert Burns' birth on 25 January each year. It's celebrated mainly in Scotland but can also be celebrated anywhere.

Pay Day (31st)
For many this will be the first pay day of the year. Will you be saving or spending?

New Years Resolutions
New Years Resolutions Update (30-31st)
January is done. How did you get on with your resolutions? Now is the time to reflect and see what went well, what didn't and what can you do to improve in February.

Ideas To Help You Save For Christmas

Last updated January '25

Saving for Christmas for most people starts in January. Christmas can be one of the most stressful times of year so it's sensible for us to get a head start and start preparing for Christmas as early as now. The January sales is a great place to start as you can get some amazing bargains on gifts, decorations or homeware that you can put away in preparation for Christmas. Every year I say I will start saving for Christmas as soon as possible and I never do. This year I have decided I am going to start saving for Christmas now and I have a few ideas on how to help you save for Christmas if you want to start now too.

save money logo

1p Challenge

The 1p challenge is probably the most known saving scheme as is quite a popular choice. It's very simple to follow and if done correctly by Christmas you will have over £600 in your saving pot.

So here's how it works

On 1st January you put 1p in to a savings jar
On 2nd January you put 2p in to a savings jar
On 3rd January you put 3p in to a savings jar
On 4th January you put 4p in to a savings jar
On 5th January you put 5p in to a savings jar
On 6th January you put 6p in to a savings jar
On 7th January you put 7p in to a savings jar
and so on adding 1p on to your total each day.

By the end of this challenge you will have saved well over £600 in time for Christmas.

This challenge can be done in reverse if you wanted to save larger amounts at the beginning on the year.

On 1st January you put £3.65 in to a savings jar
On 2nd January you put £3.64 in to a savings jar
On 3rd January you put £3.63 in to a savings jar
On 4th January you put £3.62 in to a savings jar
On 5th January you put £3.61 in to a savings jar
On 6th January you put £3.60 in to a savings jar
On 7th January you put £3.59 in to a savings jar
and so on until Christmas.

It's a simple saving challenge which would certainly give you a head start towards your Christmas Spends.

The 52 Week Challenge

This idea is similar to to the 1p challenge however you don't have to remember to add your pennies to your savings jar each week you add each week and it's a pound challenge rather than a penny challenge so by Christmas you will have saved over £1300.

So here's how it works

Week one add £1 to your savings jar
Week two add £2 to your savings jar
Week three add £3 to your savings jar
Week four add £4 to your savings jar

By the end of the month you will have saved £10 now this won't seem much but it soon mounts up as you head in to months 6,7,8 and finally in to December when your pot will have well over £1000 in it.

You can also do this challenge in reverse too

Week one add £52 to your savings jar
Week two add £51 to your savings jar
Week three add £50 to your savings jar
Week four add £49 to your savings jar

Doing this challenge in reverse means that at the end of the month you will have £202 in your pot.

Save With Your Supermarket

Asda offer a savings reward card which is perfect if you shop at their store. The cards are usually found in store or you can order one online. Every time you shop you can add an amount to your savings card. You have full control so can add as much or as little as you like and as often as you want. The amount you save on your card can be put towards your shopping in store, online and also on George online.

At the end of the year they usually offer a small reward to say thank you for saving with them each year.

If you are a regular shopper at Tesco then you can will know that Tesco offer a reward scheme in the form of Tesco Club Card Points. These points are converted in to vouchers throughout the year and are a great way to save to help towards your Christmas food shop.

You could also buy gift cards throughout the year which are usually by the checkouts to save for Christmas. Unfortunately Tesco gift cards can only be loaded once so they cannot be topped up so not as easy as the Asda Christmas Saving card but still worth it if Tesco is your regular supermarket.

Money Saving / Cash Back Apps

We have been using money saving apps now for quite a few years and the amount of cash back we earn really does build up. This can be left in the app or you can withdraw and add to your saving jars. There are so many money saving and cash back apps out there but these are a few of our favourites.

Checkout Smart
Checkout Smart is a cash back app that offers you cash back on certain products when bought at certain stores.

Every day new offers are loaded and the more you use it the more the offers refresh. All you need to do is..

Check the app each day for offers
Choose which offers you want to redeem
Head to the supermarket and buy the products
After purchasing take a photograph of your receipt
Await confirmation of your cash back

Once your cash back has been confirmed it will go on to your balance. You can cash out your balance at any time however no fee will be charged if your balance goes above £20.00. Cash back can be paid to your bank via BACS or PayPal.

The amount of cash back on products does vary however sometimes the app offers you the chance to receive 100% cash back making it completely free.

Shopmium
Shopmium is very similar to Checkout Smart. It offers you cash back on certain products and usually refreshes every 1 to 2 days with new offers.

To use Shopmium all you need to do is

Check the app each day for offers
Choose which offers you want to redeem
Head to the supermarket and buy the products
After purchasing take a photograph of your receipt
Await confirmation of your cash back

Shopmium doesn't give you the option to save up your cash back within the app, it is sent directly to your chosen payment method once validated.

There is a reward scheme with Shopmium called Shopmium club. It gives you the option to upgrade to Gold level free of charge by completing easy steps.

Share your referral code
Every member has a refer a friend code that not only benefits you but your friend too. If you friend signs up using your code ( KFYYKYGQ - This is mine) your friend will receive a free gift. At the moment it's a tube of Pringles. You as the referrer will also get a reward of £3 which will go as credit against future cash back offers.

Redeem Offers
Submit at least 10 cash backs to reach Gold level then submit at least 1 per month to maintain in the Gold level.

There are lots of benefits to being in Gold level including
Exclusive challenges
Previews of offers before they go live
Special gift on your birthday
Momentarily reserved offers

Quidco
Quidco is an online cash back app that offers great rates of cash back when shopping online.

There are hundreds of retailers including well known stores such as Argos, B&Q, H Samuel this list is huge. You can also earn cash back on holidays such as TUI, Easyjet, booking.com. It's also great to earn extra cash back when switching telecom, gas, electricity providers. There is so many options to earn.

Refer a Friend Scheme
Quidco offer a refer a friend scheme that unlocks a bonus of £10 for your friend once they have signed up and had at least £5 cash back confirmed on to their account. As a referrer you will be notified once someone signs up using your referral link or your referral code (6857695 - this is mine) you will then be credited with £30 cash back.

We are just a few pounds shy of £1,200 savings since we started. Cash out is available via PayPal or bank transfer. You also have the options to buy vouchers with your cash back instead of taking cash. The vouchers are available with an added % bonus on top and differ depending on the store.

For example if you had £20 to cash out you can
Take £20 cash
Buy a voucher for Amazon with an added 2% on top
Buy a voucher for JD Sports with an added 10% on top
There are plenty of vouchers available and the added bonus ranges from 2 - 25% extra.

These are just a few ways that can help you save for Christmas. You can start at any time too, it's never too late! If you have any other ideas we would love to hear about them - comment below or message us on our socials.

How To Beat The January Blues

This post was last updated January '25

Blue Monday is the 3rd Monday in the month of January. If you haven't heard of blue Monday before or have no idea what it is well it's supposed to be the day when we can get very sad and down in the dumps. It's not surprising really because January is probably the worst month of the year as it's the month after all the Christmas festivities and there is not much to look forward to. If you are feeling a little blue this January then read our tips on how to beat the January blues.

a path through the woods

Get Outside

On these darker days its only natural to want to stay inside and curl up on the sofa however it is best to try and head outside for some fresh air if you can. Going for a walk and getting some light can make us feel a whole lot better. In between Christmas and New Year we went out to the park a few times and it really did help. Just that bit of fresh air cleared our minds and dusted off the cobwebs.

Go Shopping

Taking a trip to the shops in January can really help beat those 'down in the dumps' days. There are lots of January sale bargains still to be had out there and finding something you want or need at a reduced price can give you a lift that you need.

Disneyland Paris castle

Plan A Trip

After Christmas we all want something to look forward to so planning a trip is a great way to lift your spirits and have something planned in your diary. January is when I start browsing the Internet for cheap flights or breaks away, usually it involves a trip to Disney however we have already booked our Walt Disney World trip so I am hoping to sneak in some Winter sun for February half term.

Try Something New

January is the month for resolutions, aims and goals but they are usually made up of things we want to change about ourselves. Whether it is our weight, our job, our lack of exercise. However it would be nice for one of our aims or goals to be something positive. Think about something you've always wanted to do whether it's learn a new language or join a dance class and do it. It's good to try something new once in a while and get out of our comfort zones.

books

Spend Time With Family and Friends

If you are feeling down we automatically want to be alone however that's probably the worst thing you can do. I know it might seem hard but arrange to see family or friends. Even if it's just for a coffee and a catch up, spending time with people who love and care for us can just be what we need to get through the' down days'.

Me Time

We all need a little 'Me Time' however most of us tend to put others first and we forget about us. It's important to remember that we need time for ourselves away from busy work schedules and every day life. We need to make sure we take care of ourselves and January is the best time to start a new routine for ourselves whether it's a weekly pamper night, an early night or just curling up with that book that you've been meaning to read for a year. I am determined this year to read more and have set myself a challenge to read 30 books this year. It works out on average just 20 pages per night so I am hoping I can smash this!

If you are suffering from the January blues this year just remember you are not alone so please do reach out to someone.

Exploring Internet Safety With Your Child - A Guide For Parents

Disclosure - This is a collaborative post.

The internet is a vast and fascinating place, filled with endless opportunities for learning, creativity, and connection. Much like the real world, it offers both exciting possibilities and potential dangers. As parents, it’s essential to teach our children how to explore the internet safely and stay safe online especially as they grow and start to navigate this digital space more independently.

As a family with an 11-year-old son, we understand the challenges of balancing internet freedom and safety. Whether your child is just starting to use the internet or is already familiar with social media and online gaming, setting boundaries and teaching safe practices is key to ensuring they have a positive experience online.

Whenever your child uses the Internet, it should be done in an open space where you can assist them and monitor what they are doing. Some families choose to use a secure VPN so that your IP address is hidden and therefore you cannot be tracked or traced.

In this post, we’ll cover practical tips for exploring internet safety with your child and how to foster an open, trusting environment that encourages safe internet use.

Why Internet Safety Matters

The internet is like a vast city, teeming with both trustworthy sources and those with ill intentions. From online scams to inappropriate content, children can unknowingly stumble into risky situations. As parents, we need to provide guidance to help them avoid these hazards.

At home, we've always made internet safety a priority for our son. It’s an ongoing conversation, and one that evolves as he gets older and more curious about the online world. We want him to enjoy the benefits of the internet while understanding its risks.

Set Clear Guidelines from the Start

It’s important to establish rules for internet use as soon as your child starts using it. Make sure they know that their online activities should take place in an open, shared space where you can monitor them. For example, our son uses his tablet in the living room where we can easily check in on what he’s doing.

One of the first steps we took was setting up parental controls on devices. Many systems, like smartphones and tablets, have built-in tools that allow you to limit screen time, restrict certain websites, and control which apps can be downloaded. Using these controls helps create a safer online environment for your child.

Another tip is to consider using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to enhance security. A VPN hides your IP address, making it more difficult for others to track your online activity. This extra layer of protection can give both you and your child peace of mind while browsing.

Educate Your Child About Internet Dangers

While setting up safeguards is important, educating your child about the potential dangers they might encounter is crucial. Our son, for example, is at the age where he's becoming more independent online, which is why we’ve made sure to talk to him about the risks.

Start by explaining what the internet is in a simple way that your child can understand. We told our son that the internet is like an enormous library or playground where anyone can share information or play games. However, not everything or everyone in this space can be trusted. This analogy helped him grasp the idea that just because something is online doesn’t make it true or safe.

Encourage your child to ask questions and to come to you if they encounter something they’re unsure about. By fostering an open dialogue, you create an environment where your child feels comfortable discussing their online experiences with you.

Teach Them to Fact-Check Information

One of the greatest challenges of the digital age is separating fact from fiction. As children grow older, they’ll inevitably come across information that’s misleading or outright false. Whether it’s viral news, a social media post, or a YouTube video, teaching your child to fact-check is an invaluable skill.

We’ve taught our son to question the things he reads online. For example, we showed him how to check reputable news sites, like BBC or major newspapers, to verify stories that might seem exaggerated. It’s also important to explain the difference between opinion and fact, especially when it comes to online forums and social media posts.

Protecting Your Child on Social Media

For many children and teens, social media is a huge part of their daily lives. Platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat are places where they can connect with friends, share photos, and express themselves. However, social media also comes with risks, including privacy concerns, cyberbullying, and inappropriate content.

Before allowing your child to sign up for social media accounts, set up some basic rules:

Account Privacy

Ensure their profiles are set to private so that only friends can see their posts.

Personal Information

Teach them not to share personal details, such as their full name, home address, school, or location.

Strangers

Make sure they know not to accept friend requests or messages from people they don’t know in real life.

In addition to setting rules, consider using tool like TiSPY – a parental monitoring app to track your child’s social media activity, including to monitor chats and online activity. This app helps set screen time limits, blocks harmful content, and alerts you to any red flags. When combined with open communication, they offer a balanced way to keep your child safe while allowing them the independence to enjoy social media responsibly     .

We have an open-door policy when it comes to our son’s online activities. He knows he can talk to us about anything he sees or hears online without fear of getting into trouble. By maintaining this transparency, we can help him navigate social media more safely.

Use Antivirus Software and Regular Updates

As children become more tech-savvy, they may want to explore new games, apps, and websites. This curiosity can sometimes lead to downloading unsafe software or encountering malware. Make sure you have an up-to-date antivirus program installed on all devices to protect against harmful downloads.

For example, free antivirus programs can be an effective starting point, but consider investing in more comprehensive security software that offers features like real-time protection and parental controls.

We regularly check our son’s device to ensure all apps and software are safe and up to date. Encouraging good habits, like avoiding suspicious links or pop-ups, helps build a strong foundation for safe internet use.

Create an Open Dialogue

Ultimately, the most effective way to protect your child online is to maintain open communication. By regularly discussing internet safety, you can help them feel comfortable coming to you with any concerns or questions. It’s important to create a non-judgmental space where your child knows they won’t be punished for making mistakes online.

In our home, we talk to our son about the importance of being respectful and kind to others online, just as he would be in real life. We remind him that the internet is permanent—once something is posted, it’s difficult to take back.

Exploring the internet with your child is an ongoing process. By setting clear guidelines, educating them about potential dangers, and maintaining an open dialogue, you can help your child navigate the online world safely and responsibly.

For our family, teaching our son about internet safety has been an evolving journey. With each new stage, we adapt our approach to meet his needs, ensuring he can enjoy the benefits of the internet while staying safe. By implementing these strategies, you too can empower your child to explore the internet with confidence.

Christmas at Dunham Massey: A Magical 2024 Experience

Updated October 2024

We absolutely love a good Christmas light trail, and it’s become a tradition for our family to visit at least one or two every year. Our fascination with festive lights began with the iconic Blackpool Illuminations, a place I’ve visited since I was little. Over the years, light trails have grown in popularity, becoming a magical way to kick off the holiday season, and now Christmas light trails are one of our must-do family activities each December.

Here's everything you need to know about visiting Christmas at Dunham Massey and make sure you check out our thoughts below for our honest opinion of the event.

It’s the perfect way to get into the Christmas spirit.

Our Thoughts

This was our fourth year visiting Dunham Massey’s Christmas light trail, and each year, it seems to get better and better. Last year, John and I went on our own, which was a different experience from our usual family outing. While it was lovely to wander through the lights at our own pace and enjoy the festive atmosphere, we did miss having the boys with us. So this year we made it a family outing.

Like I said Christmas at Dunham Massey just gets better and better each year. The choice of music this year was definitely my favourite. The light installations this year were also amazing and the light installation on the house at the end is not to be missed and a highlight for me.

For families, couples, or groups of friends, a Christmas light trail is the perfect way to celebrate the holiday season. If you haven’t experienced one yet, make sure to add it to your 2024 Christmas bucket list!

Ready to Plan Your Visit?
Christmas light trails have quickly become a beloved part of our festive season, and they offer a truly magical way to create lasting memories. Whether you’re planning to visit Dunham Massey or another light trail across the UK, make sure to book your tickets early and wrap up warm!
