Ideas To Keep You Busy In September

Last Updated September 2023

For some of us, September means back to school. School runs will come back with a bang and the chaos of making packed lunches, washing uniforms and PE kits and trying to manage our kids social lives will keep us busy this month. However if you are looking for more there are some ideas to keep you busy in September.

Read A New Book Month

Reading is something I have really enjoyed over the past few months and I actually joined a Monthly Book Club. If you have one local to you or if a group of friends could set one up I would definitely recommend. It opens you up to a variety of genres and you all get to talk about it at the end of the month, giving your thoughts and opinions.

Friendship Month

Make time for your friends this month. Arrange a lunch, a meet up for a coffee or go for a nice walk in the park. It's nice to have a catch up and friendship month is a gentle reminder to make time for people who are important to us.

Lazy Mum's Day (1st)

It's only the 3rd day of September and already us mum's out there need a lazy day. Take advantage and get someone else to take the kids to school or make the dinner. Enjoy your day.

Cheese Pizza Day (5th)

Today is the day to celebrate the cheese pizza. Head to the shops and pick up a cheese pizza for dinner. If you are feeling creative why not make your own. If you don't fancy making dough out of flour then you can always but a pre made base. It's actually a great activity to try with the kids too.

It only happens in the movies book

Read A Book Day (6th)

As it's read  a new book month today is the day to make sure you actually sit back, relax and read a few chapters of your latest book.

Beer Lovers Day (7th)

There are lots of ways you can celebrate the day dedicated to beer. Stay in and enjoy your favourite beverage, head out to the local pub for a pint or two, enjoy a brewery tour or try a new beer.

Star Trek Day (8th)

Fans will enjoy this day to celebrate everything Star Trek. Binge watch your favourite series.

Teddy Bear Day (9th)

A teddy bear is one of the most popular children's toys ever. I think at some point we have all had that favourite teddy that we couldn't sleep without. Do you still have yours? Give it some love today and look back on all the memories you shared together.

Grandparent's Day (12th)

Grandparents day, we can celebrate the wonderful people that are grandparents. We tend to celebrate on Mother's Day or Father's Day but if you don't then today is the chance to celebrate.

Roald Dahl Day (13th)

Today is Roald Dahl's birthday and this day was created to honour the amazing writer he was. Enjoy a Roald Dahl story today, throw a themed party or watch a movie.

Kids Take Over The Kitchen Day (13th)

Another chance for us to sit back and let someone else cook the dinner tonight.

Play Doh Day (16th)

Do we really need an excuse to play with some dough? We love play doh here, lots of fun using our imaginations to create and it's a great activity for fine manipulative skills too.

First Love Day (18th)

Who was your first love? Take a trip down memory lane and remember your first love. Do you still know each other? Maybe you married and are still together now.

Wife Appreciation Day (19th)

This day sounds good to me. A day to celebrate all the wives out there and recognise what amazing people we are.

Pepperoni Pizza Day (20th)

Another day dedicated to the Italian favourite, pizza. This time it's Pepperoni.

Woods

Autumn Begins (22nd)

Today is the beginning of one of my favourite seasons, Autumn. There are many reasons why I love Autumn but my favourite reason is that Christmas will soon be here.

Car Free Day (22nd)

Leave the car at home today and choose to walk or take public transport.

Hobbit Day (22nd)

A day to celebrate the birthday of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins. This year also celebrates 20 years since Lord of The Rings movie was released so it's even more important fans celebrate on this day.

ice cream

Ice Cream Cone Day (22nd)

Ice cream cones are usually a popular after dinner choice here for little J every day but am sure we will all enjoy a cone today.

One Hit Wonder (25th)

Some of my favourite songs over the years have been one hit wonders, what's yours?

Family Day (27th)

Life can be busy so make sure you make time for each other today, come together and celebrate family day. It could just be making sure you all sit down for dinner together, watch a movie or just chat.

Ask A Stupid Question Day (30th)

The phrase 'there is no such thing as stupid question' springs to mind however I know I have been too shy to ask questions in the past in case it sounds silly. Today is the day to ask those questions and don't be shy.

I am always so grateful for any support I receive on my blog and social channels. If you did find this post useful there are a few ways that you could say thanks and support Playdays and Runways.

Instructed Session At Astbury Water Sports Centre

Disclosure - We were invited along to have an instructed session. Any thoughts, opinions and photographs are our own.

I'd like to say as a family we are quite adventurous and will always give something a go especially if it pushes us out of our comfort zone. I think nowadays we spend far too much in front of a screen whether it's working, gaming, using our phones so I am always aware of getting outside as much as possible. We are lucky that the boys love being outside especially Little J who is always up for an adventure. Whilst most of our adventures are on land this week Little J and John took to the water for an instructed canoeing session at Astbury Water Centre. It was meant to be for all three of us however my sea legs must have stayed at home so I happily watched from the side.

Preparing For KS2 SATS with Books2Door

Disclosure - This is a collaborative post. Books2Door referral scheme gives us both £5 off our orders by buying through this link

This year we are heading in to our final year of primary school. I don't feel ready for secondary school open days, applications and years 6 SATS as it's all come round so quickly. However I do want to prepare little J as much as possible and we have ordered a selection of books and revision cards that will be perfect for preparing for his KS2 SATS.

Ks2 sats revision books

Preparing For KS2 SATS

KS2 SATs are so important and a huge part of year 6 in primary school. Having resources at home can really help boost your child's knowledge and also confidence. Sitting down to take a test can be a daunting experience so practising at home can help them get used to the format and also the time limit.

Here are a few of the resources we will be using this year.

Ks2 sats revision papers

New KS2 Complete SATS Practice Papers Pack 1: Science, Maths & English

The KS2 Mixed Practice Paper Pack  contains 6 full sets of realistic tests - two Maths SATS papers, and two English SATS papers, plus two Science papers. When I did exams I always found test papers were the best revision for me. I found it really hard to revise by reading. I would get fed up. I'm hoping these papers will help little J put in to practice everything that he's learnt at school.

I also like that this pack has a Parents' Guide included. Everything parents need to know about the SATS. It's a great guide that answered a few of my questions.

KS2 English SATS Revision Book - Ages 10-11

This KS2 English Revision Book contains everything pupils need to know for the tough SATS tests in Year 6. It's filled to the brim with clear, concise study notes and examples on every topic, plus practice questions at the end of each section to cement what pupils have learnt.

English is the subject Little J struggles with the most. They say you are either good at English or Maths and he is definitely our little maths whizz, so English is the subject he will need to revise for the most.

Ks2 sats english revision cards

KS2 English SATS Revision Question Cards: Grammar, Punctuation & Spelling

These KS2 Question Cards are the perfect way to test pupils on their Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar knowledge. This pack contains over 60 cards of fun, informal questions and helpful tips - ideal for honing those all-important KS2 SPaG skills. Challenge sections throughout the pack stretch pupils and deepen their understanding of grammar. Answers can be found on the backs of the cards.

I think flash cards are perfect and a great way to revise without staring at books. They are quick and portable and we can use them on car journeys when we are out and about.

KS2 English SAT Buster 10-Minute Tests: Reading - Book 1

This book of SAT Buster 10-Minute tests is fantastic for splitting KS2 English SATS preparation into bite-sized chunks. Little J's attention span isn't great so I'm hoping that 10 minute sessions might help him take in more than he would if we made him sit for 1 hour at a time.

Each set of quick tests includes reading questions in the style of the real SATS, with texts that progress in difficulty throughout each set. The tests are broken up with fun puzzle pages, so pupils can practise their English skills in other contexts. Answers are included, along with a handy progress chart to help work out which level children are working at.

KS2 English SAT Buster 10-Minute Tests: Grammar, Punctuation & Spelling - Book 1

Bursting with bite-sized practice tests, this book is a brilliant way to split SATS preparation into manageable chunks. Each set of quick tests covers grammar, punctuation and spelling with questions in the style of the real SATS including audio tests for spelling (you can either read these out from the pull-out transcripts or access free online audio files on the CGP website). Answers are included, along with a handy progress chart to help work out which level children are working at.

Again the 10 minute tests will be perfect for little J as I know he wont sit for much longer than that at a time and as they are so short he can manage his progress quicker.

10 Essential Tips for Safeguarding Your Touring Caravan: A Comprehensive Guide to Caravan Insurance

Disclosure - This is a collaborative post

Touring caravans are a symbol of freedom, allowing you to embark on exciting journeys while carrying the comforts of home with you. However, to fully enjoy the nomadic lifestyle, it's imperative to safeguard your touring caravan against a range of potential risks. This comprehensive guide not only provides you with ten essential tips for securing your mobile haven but also delves into the significance of having the right insurance coverage while also making comparisons with static caravan insurance for a more nuanced understanding.

a family overlooking mountains from outside their caravan

1. Understanding Your Unique Coverage Needs

As you begin the process of selecting the most suitable touring caravan insurance, it's crucial to start by comprehending your specific coverage requirements. These needs can vary greatly depending on factors such as the value of your caravan, your travel habits, and the contents you carry within it. Taking these factors into account will help you tailor your insurance policy to your caravan and lifestyle accurately.

2. Selecting the Appropriate Insurance Type

Touring caravan insurance typically offers three main categories: fully comprehensive, third-party, fire, and theft, and third-party only. Each type comes with varying levels of coverage. Fully comprehensive insurance stands as the most extensive option, encompassing protection against damage to your caravan, personal belongings, and liability claims. The type of insurance you choose should align with your budget and level of protection needed.

3. Coverage for Your Belongings

While focusing on the physical protection of your caravan is paramount, it's equally important not to overlook the valuable contents you carry inside it. Ensure that your insurance policy extends coverage to your personal belongings, including items such as electronics, clothing, and camping gear. This added protection ensures that you are financially secure in the event of theft, damage, or loss of these possessions.

4. Regular Policy Updates

Caravans, like any other asset, age over time. Additionally, you might make improvements or upgrades to your caravan. To maintain comprehensive protection, it's essential to update your insurance policy regularly. Neglecting this crucial step could potentially lead to underinsurance, leaving you vulnerable to unforeseen risks.

5. Investing in Security Measures

The security of your touring caravan should be a top priority. Enhance its safety by investing in security measures such as wheel clamps, hitch locks, and alarms. Many caravan insurance providers offer discounts for these additional security features, which can also serve as a strong deterrent against theft or vandalism, thereby reducing your insurance premiums.

6. Examining Policy Exclusions

It's imperative to thoroughly review your insurance policy to understand any exclusions or limitations. Different policies might have varying terms and conditions. By grasping what circumstances might not be covered, you can take extra precautions if necessary, or even consider supplementary insurance for specific risks that may not be included in your primary policy.

7. Safe Driving and Legal Compliance

Safe driving practices not only contribute to your well-being and that of other road users but also have a direct impact on your insurance rates. A clean driving record and adherence to traffic laws will not only keep you in good stead with your insurer but also decrease the likelihood of accidents, which could negatively affect your insurance premiums.

8. Exploring Membership Benefits

Consider joining caravan clubs or associations as they often provide insurance benefits to their members. Membership perks can include access to exclusive insurance packages with discounted rates. These organisations are also excellent sources of information and support for caravan enthusiasts, enhancing your overall experience.

9. European Coverage for International Adventures

If your caravan adventures extend beyond your home country's borders, it's crucial to opt for insurance that offers coverage across Europe. This extension ensures that you remain protected during international travels, including aspects such as legal liabilities and breakdown assistance. It's a necessary addition for those who have their sights set on exploring the continent.

10. Comparison Shopping for the Best Deal

While it might be tempting to settle for the first insurance policy you come across, it's advisable to shop around, compare quotes, and thoroughly research insurance providers. Each provider may offer different packages, and their rates can vary significantly. Taking the time to find the best deal that aligns with your touring caravan insurance needs can save you money in the long run.

Touring Caravan Insurance vs. Static Caravan Insurance: Understanding the Distinctions

It's essential to distinguish between touring caravan insurance and static caravan insurance. Touring caravan insurance is specifically designed for mobile caravans that frequently hit the road, while static caravan insurance is tailored for caravans that remain stationary, typically situated at caravan parks or holiday sites. The primary difference lies in the mobility of the caravan and the related risks. Static caravan insurance caters to the caravan's stationary use, whereas touring caravan insurance accounts for the travel and transportation-related risks unique to mobile caravans.

In conclusion, safeguarding your touring caravan is a prudent financial decision and crucial for your peace of mind while exploring the open road. By comprehending your insurance needs and following these ten comprehensive tips, you can embark on your caravan adventures with confidence, knowing that you have taken the necessary steps to protect your investment and yourself. Whether you possess a touring caravan built for the road or a static caravan stationed at a holiday park, the right insurance policy ensures that your cherished getaway remains secure.

Staying At La Villa Hotel Nice Promenade

Last month John and I got the chance to have a couple of days away, just the two of us. We haven't been away without the kids for over 10 years so we were excited at the idea of going abroad but had no idea where to choose. After lots of research we chose Nice, France. We had no idea what to expect, if three days in Nice was enough but we went with it. We browsed so many hotels but we found a little gem on booking.com and we instantly fell in love with it.

Back To School With Books2Door

I’ve said it before but September really is my favourite month. September reminds me that my favourite time of year is on the way. Autumn is just around the corner, we will soon be visiting Alton Towers for Oktoberfest, then before we know it we will be pumpkin picking, setting off fireworks and then Christmas will soon be here. Working in an Education setting also means that September is the beginning of a new school year for me. I really enjoy meeting the new children, getting to know them and preparing for our school year together.

A selection of books on a book shelf

However I haven’t always liked September, when I was a child September meant back to school with the uncertainty of a new teacher, new classroom and possibly even new friends. So September can be a nervous and anxious time for some and whilst teachers and carers will do all they can to settle children into their new routine, as a parent we can also help them before September arrives.

Whether our little ones are starting nursery, reception, going into a new school year in primary school, starting secondary school, sixth form, college or even university we can help them and prepare them for their new adventure ahead.

If our little ones are nervous or anxious about what lies ahead we can talk to them but also reading stories can be a huge help. Books2Door have a lovely range of books and resources that can help children prepare for the new school year. These are a few of my favourites.

Lucy and Tom at School

Lucy and Tom at School by Shirley Hughes
Lucy has her school things ready. She has a new grey skirt, a pair of brown shoes, a pencil case and a satchel. Tom wishes that he had a satchel too. Full of warmth and good humour, the happy simplicity of childhood is captured in this richly illustrated, classic picture book about two young children’s first experience of school.

starting school book

Starting School by Allan Ahlberg
Following a number of children's first experiences, this picture book takes children right from their very first day to the end of the school year. This reassuring read will support even the most nervous school-starter, exploring each emotion, from fear to excitement, with care. The perfect read to start a conversation about any pre-school nerves, packed with playful illustrations and easy to understand explanations. This is a book that you'll want to read again and again - far beyond the last day of the school year.

No Worries : Your Guide To Starting Secondary Schoo

No Worries : Your Guide To Starting Secondary School by Jenny Alexander
No Worries is the ultimate secondary school survival guide, with tips, quizzes and jokes to help children prepare. What if I've got the wrong stuff? What if I don't fit in? What if the older kids are horrible to me? Starting secondary school can be an exciting time - it's a great adventure but sometimes, before you go, you can get a touch of the 'what ifs'. You may be feeling anxious or stressed about leaving primary school. No Worries is full of information about going up from primary to secondary school and covers all of the big worries and anxieties. With practical hints and tips, jokes and quizzes for finding your way around, making new friends, social media and staying on top of homework, this fully-revised edition of Going Up! is the essential no-worries guide to starting secondary school.

These are just a few of my personal favourites however you can browse a whole range of books by searching Back to School
