The spooky season for me starts as soon as September has finished. October is the month that I like to transform our house with pumpkins decorations, orange and brown furnishing and a smell of pumpkin spice in the air. It's also one of my favourite seasons to snuggle up with a book and I am currently reading some new Halloween books for adults from Books2Door. If like me you enjoy a scary story then these will be a perfect choice.

Disney's Twisted Tales

You may already know I am a huge Disney fan and whilst I love the heroes and princesses I am also drawn to the villains in Disney movies. Who doesn't love a good baddie? The idea behind the Twisted Tales series is that the Villains are the main characters and it's their storyline that is the main attraction. They are a great read and perfect for Disney lovers like me.

Disney Twisted Tales Vol. 1

1. A Whole New World
2. Once Upon a Dream
3. As Old as Time

There are 3 stories to enjoy with the Disney Twisted Tales Vol.1 collection. The stories are based around Aladdin, Sleeping Beauty and Beauty and The Beast.

Disney Twisted Tales Vol. 2

1. Reflection
2. Mirror, Mirror
3. Part of Your World

If Vol.1 isn't enough you can also enjoy Vol.2 of Disney's Twisted Tales following the stories of Mulan, Snow White and The Little Mermaid.

The collection is perfect for both young adults and older. They are spooky rather than scary with lots of Disney magic in there too.

You can buy Vol. 1 and 2 combined which is cheaper than buying both separately.

Stephen King - Movies Collection

Stephen King has been a well-known figure in horror and science fiction writing for decades. His first release was Carrie, originally published in 1974. That was quickly followed by Salem’s Lot in 1975 and The Shining in 1977. There have been many adaptations of King’s novels over the years. This collection contains 4 of the most notable titles that were adapted onto the big screen, The Shining, Pet Sematary, IT and Doctor Sleep, Stephen King - The Movies Collection.

Stephen King has always been John's favourite author and although he has read most of his books many times he will always go back to his favourites.

Supporting A Child's Emotional Literacy With Mighty Cards

Disclosure - I have previously collaborated with Mighty Cards. This post was last updated October 2023

We are now heading in to the final year of primary school and whilst little J is showing no signs of anxiety or nervousness, I know this year will be tough on him for many reasons. Firstly the last year of primary means the end to everything he has known for the past 7 years. He will be split up from his friends as they head to different secondary schools, preparing and revising for KS2 SATS will also be a tough time as no one likes exams. Supporting a child's emotional literacy is very important and I am going to try everything I can to keep him as calm and stress free as possible.

Mighty Cards

When we were recently sent a set of Mighty Cards, I knew that these may be what I had been looking for. The cards which are designed for ages 4-11, provide effective and engaging strategies to help children manage their feelings and emotions. The pack consists of 36 cards which are divided in to 3 types of activities.

There are a wide range of emotions that we experience every day including happy, sad, excited, worried, embarrassed and anxious. Sometimes these may be difficult to deal with so having some simple strategies to follow can really help deal with those tricky feelings.

The cards are really simple to use and understand, and for us we have been taking the time to choose a card just before dinner to help us enjoy our evening a little better and then before bed to help us feel rested and content.

Mighty Cards

Breathe

Breathing strategies to calm your body and focus on your mind.

A sample of a Breathe Card is Finger Breathing.

Use a finger from your right hand to gently trace up and down the fingers on your left hand.

Each time you trace up a finger, take a slow deep breath in through your nose. Each time you trace down a finger, slowly release your breath through your mouth.

Once you have traced the fingers on one hand, swap hands and repeat.

Mighty Cards

Move

Physical exercises to help relieve tension in your body.

A sample of a Move Card is Wall Push.

Stand in front of a wall and place your arms out in front of you so your hands are touching the wall.

When you are ready, try with all your strength to push the wall over. Count for 10 seconds, pushing hard. Then shake your arms and legs gently to release the tension in your body.

Repeat 3 times.

Mighty Cards

Create

Creative activities to build a sense of calm and control.

A sample of a Create Card is Calm Poster.

Write the word CALM on paper in big writing. Colour and decorate the page using your favourite colours and stickers.

As you are colouring and decorating, imagine that you are filling yourself with calmness and joy.

Place your CALM poster somewhere where you can see it often.

How you use the cards is down to your own personal choice however even though they are designed with children in mind we have all been using the cards and after just a few days we have already felt the benefit.

How To Choose A Good Fitness Tracker For Family Days Out

Disclosure - This is a collaborative post.

Getting out and about with your family is a hugely important thing to do, and you should try to fit it in - or, even better, prioritise it - as much as possible. There are, of course, a few things that can make a day out with the family even better, and one of these, perhaps surprisingly, is a fitness tracker.

These devices don’t only help you stay active, but they can also help you bond as a family because you can set goals to work towards together, for example, plus they can even help you stay in touch, just in case someone gets lost. With that in mind, here are some things to consider when you’re choosing a good fitness tracker for a family day out.

two people in a canoe

Find A User-Friendly Design

When you’re looking for a fitness tracker, you’ll need to search out a user-friendly design and make this one of the first things you look for when you’re working out what tracker is going to work best for you.

If you’re using the device as a family, you’ll want to make sure everyone can use it and understand it, so look for things like an easy-to-read screen, easy navigation, and comfortable wristbands (that are adjustable). You can even find models that are specifically designed for kids, so if you don’t intend to wear your fitness tracker other than when you’re out with the family, that could be a good idea too.

Read Reviews

It’s also really useful to read reviews of the various makes and models you might consider buying. When you do this, you can compare a few different designs and functions and see what other people thought of the different fitness trackers on the market.

Even if a review is a little older, it’s still worth reading through, as the information will generally still be correct. For example, this review of Garmin's Vivoactive 3 is a few years old, but it will still give you plenty of information, and it might even save you money because buying an older model will usually be cheaper than a newer one, and if it’s got all the functions you need, it’s a bargain.

Durability

Some days out will be peaceful and quiet, and that’s great, but some will be loud and busy and active. This is also wonderful, and important, but these days can take their toll on your equipment, from bags to shoes and much more, so it’s wise to think about durability when you’re choosing things to take out with you.

That’s important for your fitness tracker as well, so when you’re starting your search, you’ll need to check how durable each option is. Depending on what you and your family like to do and where you go, it can also be a good idea to look for a water-resistant version, just to be on the safe side - the last thing you’ll want to do is find a great fitness tracker that does everything you want it to do, but that breaks as soon as it gets wet.

The Benefits Of Wraparound Care For Parents and Children

Disclosure - This is a collaborative post

In today's fast-paced world, finding the right balance between work, family, and personal time can be a challenging task for parents. This is where wraparound care steps in as a valuable resource. This holistic approach to childcare provides a wide range of benefits for both parents and children, fostering a supportive environment that promotes well-being and growth. Inspired by the teachings of this private school in West Sussex, continue reading for the benefits of wraparound care for parents and children.

Flexibility and Convenience

Wraparound care offers parents the flexibility they need to manage their work commitments while ensuring their children receive the care and attention they require. With extended hours, including early mornings and evenings, parents have the freedom to structure their schedules more efficiently, reducing stress and enhancing productivity.

Consistency and Stability

Children thrive on routine and stability. Wraparound care provides a consistent environment, helping children build trust and confidence in their caregivers. Knowing that they have a safe, reliable place to go before and after school allows them to focus on learning and play without worrying about disruptions in their daily routine.

Academic Support and Enrichment

Many wraparound care programs offer educational activities and homework assistance, providing children with valuable support in their academic pursuits. This additional guidance can help reinforce learning and improve performance in school, ultimately contributing to a child's long-term success.

Social Development and Interaction

Interacting with peers in a structured environment is crucial for a child's social development. Wraparound care offers ample opportunities for children to engage with their peers, build friendships, and develop essential social skills. These experiences help children grow emotionally and intellectually, preparing them for future social situations.

circle games

Physical Activity and Well-being

Engaging in physical activities is essential for a child's overall health and well-being. Many wraparound care programs incorporate outdoor play, sports, and other physical activities, promoting a healthy lifestyle and teaching children the importance of staying active.

Emotional and Behavioural Support

Trained caregivers in wraparound care programs are equipped to address a child's emotional and behavioural needs. They provide a nurturing environment where children can express themselves and learn valuable coping mechanisms. This support can be especially beneficial for children facing challenges or transitions in their lives.

Peace of Mind for Parents

Knowing that their children are in a safe and enriching environment provides parents with peace of mind. This allows them to focus on their work or personal commitments, knowing that their children are well-cared for and thriving in a supportive setting.

Wraparound care is a valuable resource that not only supports parents in their professional endeavours but also nurtures the growth and development of children. With its flexibility, consistency, academic support, and emphasis on social and emotional well-being, wraparound care plays a vital role in creating a positive and enriching environment for families. Embracing this holistic approach can lead to happier, healthier, and more balanced lives for both parents and children.

The 2023 UK Tour Has Come To An End - Check Back For Tour Updates

I have always loved musicals ever since I was a little girl. I grew up watching musicals such as Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Calamity Jane and The King and I. However one of my favourite was Annie. I watched it several times a week and would practice the dance routines in our living room. I must have drove my parents mad. A few years ago I went to the theatre to watch Annie the Musical. I was blown away. Everything about the show was fantastic from start to finish so when we got the chance to see the show again we jumped at the chance.
