Madagascar The Musical Review

It's hard to believe that Madagascar the movie took the world by storm 19 years ago. We all fell in love with Alex, Marty, Melman and Gloria as they escaped from New York Zoo and ended up in Madagascar where they had to brave the wild so far away from home. Big J was only 3 when the movie came out but he absolutely loved it and I think we used to play "I Like To Move It" on repeat. Since then it's become a family favourite and we were so excited to see Madagascar The Musical on it's UK and Ireland Tour.

Madagascar The Musical

Madagascar The Musical
Alex the lion is the king of the urban jungle, the main attraction at New York's Central Park Zoo. He and his best friends – Marty the zebra, Melman the giraffe and Gloria the hippo – have spent their whole lives in blissful captivity before an admiring public and with regular meals provided for them. Not content to leave well enough alone, Marty lets his curiosity get the better of him and makes his escape – with the help of some prodigious penguins – to explore the world.

Madagascar The Musical cast on stage

Our Thoughts
Madagascar The Musical was better than I expected. It was bright, colourful with a great script and even better music. I fell in love with all the characters again and I now have a new favourite - King Julien.

The first half of the show lasted about 40 minutes and was based around New York's Central Park zoo and Marty's birthday wish to 'visit the wild'. When Marty escapes the zoo he is soon joined by his three friends as they try to ride the subway but are soon caught by animal control. The whole first half was so enjoyable with great songs and really showcasing the friendship between the four main characters especially Alex the Lion and Marty the Zebra.

Alex (played by Joseph Hewlett) and Marty (played by Francisco Gomes) dominated the first half of the show with their great chemistry and catchy duets. I would have loved to see more of Gloria (played by Jarnéia Richard - Noel) and Melman (played by Joshua Oakes Rogers).

cast of madagascar the musical

The second half started after a 20 minute interval and began in Madagascar. The animals have washed up on the beach and are ready to explore the island when they meet King Julien, Maurice and Mort who are hiding from the Fossa, the largest carnivore on Madagascar. We see how Alex struggles to think of anything other than steak, Gloria and Melman begin a romance and Marty loves being in the wild and feels right at home. However Alex overcomes his desire to eat steak and helps his new friends be free of the threat of the Fossa.

The highlight of the second half was King Julien (played by Karim Zeroual). He was absolutely brilliant as King Julien. He really made us all laugh out loud and dance in our seats to 'I like To Move It'.

With a running time of 1 hour and 45 minutes approx including the interval it's perfect for all ages.

Supporting Children's Mental Health Week With Let's Talk

Disclosure - We were gifted the Let's Talk series for the purpose of this post. All thoughts, opinions and photographs are our own. This post contains affiliate links.

When you become a parent it's the happiest day of your life but it can also be the scariest. Our little ones enter the world without any guide or instruction booklet and it's up to us to figure out how to make sure we look after them to the best of our ability. We then spend years making sure we protect them from harm and worrying about them is constant. There are some situations that parents may struggle with and one is starting up conversations with their children about their feelings. Let's Talk have created a series of books which are perfect conversation starters amongst adults and children to support their social, emotional and mental wellbeing

series of Let's Talk book
How Are You Feeling Today? is packed with fun, imaginative ways to help children understand and cope with a whole range of different emotions.

It's a great way to give children the tools they may need to deal with lots of different feelings. Exploring 12 common emotions, including happy, angry, excited, bored and embarrassed, How Are You Feeling Today? offers ideas for what children could do when they feel this way.

how are you feeling now book

How Are You Feeling Now? is packed with fun, imaginative ways to help children understand and express a range of emotions and is a brilliant follow-up to How Are You Feeling Today?

inside let's talk books

inside let's talk books
Not a moment goes by without us feeling something.  Whether it's happiness, sadness, anger or anxiety, different feelings visit us all the time. This is the perfect picture book to help children understand and manage their feelings early on. Offering child-friendly strategies for dealing with feelings, this book looks at 12 complex emotions and makes them simple for children.

what's worrying you book

What's Worrying You? is a book all about helping children understand their worries, and what to do when they feel overwhelmed by their thoughts and feelings.

We all have worries now and then, but sometimes worries can feel like they're getting bigger and bigger, like you can't control them anymore. What do you do then?

Each page takes the child step-by-step through different worry scenarios, such as falling out with a friend, getting in trouble at school, or feeling like no one is listening. It talks about how they might feel, what they might think, and what could help them to ease the anxiety.

the same but different book

The Same but Different explores the ways in which we're all unique as well as the similarities we all share. Using everyday examples, clear explanations and colourful illustrations by Sarah Jennings, this book encourages children to rejoice in their differences. After all, imagine how boring the world would be if everyone was exactly the same!

This book covers lots of ways in which we're different, including how we look, where we live, the languages we speak, what our families are like and what we believe in. It's the perfect resource for starting important conversations with children about diversity and inclusion, with topics such as race, disability, gender, sexual orientation and religion.

Will you be my friend book

Will You Be My Friend? is ideal for starting conversations about friendship and includes a guide for parents and carers about supporting a child if they are having friendship difficulties.

This book is both humorous and charming, and prompts children to discuss the idea of friendship with parents and peers. Learning to build and maintain friendships also helps children with important life skills such as sharing, negotiating, empathising and that all-important apology when things go wrong.

Written by Molly Potter and illustrated by Sarah Jennings the Let's Talk series is such a nice and relaxed why to approach the difficult to talk about situations. The series is aimed at children aged 4+ and would be perfect to read together. Social, emotional and mental wellbeing is such an important part of our life and should be talked about more.

For more information you can visit Let's Talk Series and also download free activity packs.

Italy is a favourite holiday destination among many travel bloggers. In February, you'll find lively festivals, smaller crowds, and a new perspective on the country. While the weather might be cooler, the warmth of Italian hospitality never fades. Here are nine must-do activities if you find yourself in Italy during this charming winter month.

Experience the Venice Carnival
The Venice Carnival is one of the most famous events in Italy, attracting visitors from all over the world. It usually takes place in February, leading up to Lent. Imagine streets filled with people donning elaborate masks and costumes, creating a magical atmosphere. The city becomes a stage for performances, parades, and masquerade balls. Don't miss the chance to witness the grandeur of the Venetian celebrations – it's truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Hit the Slopes in the Italian Alps
If you're a winter sports fan, then the Italian Alps are calling your name. February offers some of the best skiing conditions, with plenty of snow and crisp mountain air. Pack for a ski trip and head to resorts like Courmayeur and Cervinia who cater to all levels of skiers and snowboarders. After an exhilarating day on the slopes, cozy up in a mountain lodge and enjoy hearty Italian cuisine by the fire.

Soak Up Some Culture in Florence
Florence, the cradle of the Renaissance, is a treasure trove of art and history. With fewer tourists around, you can take your time exploring the Uffizi Gallery, home to masterpieces by Leonardo da Vinci and Botticelli, without the usual crowds. Stroll across the Ponte Vecchio, visit the stunning Florence Cathedral, and cap off your day with gelato, even if it's a bit chilly outside – it's always gelato season in Italy!

verona

Celebrate Valentine's Day in Verona
Verona, the setting for Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet," becomes even more romantic in February. The city hosts 'Verona in Love,' a festival dedicated to love and lovers each year. The streets are adorned with heart-shaped lanterns, and there are concerts, markets, and poetry readings. You can also leave a love note on Juliet’s wall or visit the famous balcony. It's the perfect destination for couples looking for a romantic getaway.

Indulge in Chocolate at the Eurochocolate Festival in Perugia
Chocolate lovers rejoice! Perugia hosts the Eurochocolate Festival every February, where chocolate artisans from Italy and beyond showcase their delicious creations. You can sample everything from classic bars to exotic flavours you've never imagined. There are also workshops, sculptures made of chocolate, and plenty of opportunities to buy gifts for your loved ones (or for yourself!).

Explore the Quiet Beauty of Cinque Terre
The five picturesque villages of Cinque Terre are a sight to behold year-round, but visiting in February means you'll share the stunning views with fewer tourists. Wander through the colourful houses perched on rugged cliffs, hike the scenic trails connecting the villages, or simply enjoy the tranquil ambiance of the Mediterranean Sea. The cooler weather is perfect for savouring a warm bowl of seafood pasta while gazing out at the serene waters.

Attend the Historic Carnevale di Ivrea
Head to the town of Ivrea in northern Italy to witness the historic Carnevale di Ivrea, known for its unique and passionate Battle of the Oranges. This event symbolizes the fight for freedom and involves teams throwing oranges at each other, representing ancient combat. It's a thrilling spectacle that combines history, tradition, and much of citrus! Remember to wear a red hat to signal that you're just watching, not participating in the battle.

Coliseum in Rome

Discover the Wonders of Rome Without the Crowds
Rome in February is a delight for those who prefer to avoid the peak season hustle. With much shorter wait times, you can visit iconic landmarks like the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, and the Vatican Museums. Take a leisurely walk through the city's cobblestone streets, enjoy a cappuccino in a quiet piazza, and soak up the rich history surrounding you at every turn.
